Very clever one who will be able to distinguish the 9R 2002 from that of 2001. The new version plays it discreetly on its plastic. New front fender and redesigned rear shell, reinforced swingarm – basta! We went around the visible differences. On the other hand, under the fairing, we worked on the green. The main axis of work was the stiffening of the chassis. The stronger swingarm is anchored 2mm further forward to a new aluminum frame. The engine now contributes to the rigidity. The cylinder head benefits from an additional fixing point, and those at the rear have got rid of the silentblocs. Less attention for the engine which still inherits a new carburetor rail (yes, the ZX-9R still resists the charms of injection), a new crankshaft and a redesigned cylinder head. On the track, the 9R lacked ground clearance and the alternator housing paid the price when it was really racing. To remedy this, the alternator rotor is smaller, which reduces the size of the crankcase. With all this, one might think that Kawa is orienting its fat sportswoman towards more radicalism … The Ninja is more efficient but it remains the most user-friendly sports car on the big cube board. With its protective fairing, its almost comfortable position and its friendly saddle for the buttocks (and not a slice of sandwich bread), one is on the other side of the extreme offered by a 996 or an R1. Even the suspensions are relatively accommodating without making a task on the track. Here is a great quality because the majority of owners of big sports cars mainly wear their tires on open road.
But how does this new 900 behave on the asphalt of the master circuit? Good surprise, Kawa’s efforts have paid off: the machine is more incisive, is placed more easily and precisely. The wider triple trees and the rear (a little) higher give it more dynamics. The ZX-9R displays a slightly greater inertia than its rivals to swing it nimbly from one angle to another; the fault of the sworn enemy: the weight. The reinforcements of the frame bring a real plus to the rigidity of the whole, as well as unwanted pounds. Today, the Ninja displays 186 kg dry. You can feel it. Somewhat chasing against the clock but not under braking. The discs, clamped by calipers now with 4 pistons (6 previously) widen by 10 mm. Always so progressive and powerful, it remains one of the best despite a bite (somewhat) less than the present generation. The new carburettors favor the efficiency with the feelings. The more linear power curve and the torque appearing sooner allow a more efficient drive, at least on the clock because the adrenaline does not run away to diffuse in the veins. The excitement loses what the figures gain. The pilots will focus more on the behavior of the machine. They will not be disappointed with the kawa. The new swingarm and new suspension settings further improve handling. With harder springs, the fork works more progressively, brilliantly mastering mass transfers. A steering damper will not be essential because the sharp and efficient front does not seem subject to untimely steering. No flashy, effective but not radical, the new ZX-9R continues the line of non-exclusive sports, only better. It marks time against the pure and hard that are the R1 and GSX-R 1000, at least on the track. Its versatility, comfort, protection and great price are serious assets to take into account when comparing.
