Since 1990, Kawasaki has marked the Moto Magic World with a hot iron with three letters that still thrill many bikers today: The ZZR.
History: From Prehistory to the Future
1985 : It seems that the year 1985 is a good vintage for the Motorcycle World besides the fact of the full box for Suzuki and its legendary GSX-R 750, Kawa took us out of the assembly lines a 1000 RX and the alchemy prepared by the engineers from Osaka could start.
1988 : Three years later, the ZX-10 Tomcat was the delight of their owners with 222 Kg and 137 hp.
1990 : The presentation of the ZZR 1100 Hayate at the 1989 Paris Motor Show marketed a year later. This time, the face of the top speed world was born with 152 hp and 16 kilos more than the Tomcat.
1993 : The year 93 for the ZZR 1100 is a sign of both technical and aesthetic change. It becomes more beautiful and more efficient (148 hp) but also heavier, not far from the 290 kilos full made. It remains by far my favorite model.
2002 : The reign of the ZZR 1100 ended at Kawasaki with two motorcycles: The first is none other than the ZZR 1200 with the vocation of the GT spirit of its ancestor and the ZX-12R Ninja responsible for taking up the torch in the face of the sulphurous GSX-R 1300 Hayabusa.
2006 : Back to basics with the ZZR 1400 which combines Sport and GT with the same elegance inherited from its distant ancestor.
The test: Contact with the 93 ’ZZR 1100
The bike is impressive with its rounded blue and purple fairing. Its front end is instantly recognizable with its fins and two symmetrical air inlets under the optics which will later prove to be powerful and doing its job well at night. Same observation with the rear of the machine: Two chrome silencers and new fins which are the hallmark of the ZZR (1100 and 600).
I climb on the beauty, the position is tilted a bit to the front and the legs not too bent. The gaze is fixed instantly on the tachometer with the beginning of the red zone at 11,500 rpm and the 320 km / h that the counter indicates without tongue of wood. Just that, I have the banana under the helmet !!! There is also the engine temperature dial and the fuel gauge which can become demoralizing given the speed at which it goes down when the rider is in arson mode. In short, a complete dashboard with two totalizers: one for revisions and the other to anticipate the passage in reserve and use the old faucet.
Come on let’s go, I go for it, I start and the beast lets out a hoarse roar, first and the clutch surprises me with its softness. The speeds go on the fly without flinching and I pick up the pace, first corner, I have to push on the half bracelet almost exaggeratedly, I repeat the experience, thin I arrive too fast, brake on a curve…. and the bike gets up therefore pushing back the half bracelet, phew !!! It goes. Well, I calm down and wrap around the torque and it’s fun on the bar. I do notice suddenly when accelerating, but nothing prohibitive. The suspensions could have been of better quality because in the curves on bad surfaces the big Kawa waddles without becoming dangerous. Braking is not obsolete even if it is necessary to pull the right lever to stop the entire crew at prohibited speeds. Over time, the position hurts the wrists but you get used to it quite quickly after a few weeks of intensive use.
As for the cycle part, you will understand that the ZZR 1100 is not super manoeuvrable but will remain stable even in the worst situations. Otherwise the main problem with this bike is that it offers so much fun and thrill that the lucky owner can only ask for too much. And yes, a rewarding plastic, an exciting engine, a healthy cycle part and we would almost take ourselves for a pro driver with the disastrous consequences that have known it …. Anyway, the privileged playground of the ZZR remains the major highways not to say the German highway.
What more can we say, the ZZR 1100 is a well-born motorcycle that will monopolize the neurons of many bikers for a long time to come..
