Imposing, rewarding, powerful, the 1400 GTR had propelled Kawasaki in the world of the big road with panache … or rather brought it back in this segment where formerly, the 1000 GTR proudly carried the banner of the green. But this icon of the Tour de France did not evolve at the same pace as the Germans in this niche, leaving the RTs, then a few Japanese (ST 1100/1300, FJR 1300) to conquer the market..
The new GTR came out in 2007 with shocking arguments: aluminum hull frame and ZZR 1400 engine, Tetra-Lever swingarm made up of 2 double articulated arms, and various electronic equipment worthy of a Bavarian sedan. The tone is set, the 1400 GTR presenting itself as a Transcontinental Superpsort.
Kawa didn’t fall asleep on it – The GTR, along with the ZX-10R, represents its technological flagship. The manufacturer offers it a facelift going hand in hand with new equipment. The silhouette of Grand Tourisme has been slightly refined, although the exercise is not the easiest on such a liner. The right-angled panels of the fairing are imbued with flexibility, offering more room for curves and a large diffusion of the calories escaping from the radiator. The clog has become a near-perfect triangle, ending with an integrated deflector, thus providing additional protection for the feet. Just behind, the junction between the exhaust pipe and the pot is covered with a new, more stylish cover. Criticized during our test, the windshield sees its size increased and its adjustment become electronic. For the comfort of the hands, the heated grips are now standard, and we cannot forget the pluses of the 1400 GTR: keyless start system, tire pressure control, variable valve timing system, ABS, 12 V socket, cardan shaft, glove box on the tank, 14 mkg of torque below and … Ah?!? Kawasaki has added new equipment:
On its high-ranking road, Kawa inaugurates the KTRC, its first anti-skid system. Allowing better control of the rear wheel, this system will not be too much when the bike is navigating on soft ground during rotten seasons; enough to avoid a few cold sweats.
Also installed is K-ACT, 2nd generation coactive assisted braking – the driver has 2 possible choices of brake management depending on his style and / or driving conditions. And as at the moment it is the great mode of the environment, the GTR is equipped with the eco class … In fact, with an eco driving mode: there is an ‘Eco indicator on the dashboard. ‘informing the pilot about his consumption. But it can go further: by engaging the ‘green’ driving assistance mode, the electronic engine management automatically modifies the injection map, giving priority to fuel efficiency..
In the Germany – Japan match, rivals the K 1600 GT and the 1400 GTR entered the technological arms race. Bavaria has experience over many years, Akashi has the means to achieve its ambitions. The evolution of Kawa’s ship should amaze the big rollers while showing the know-how of the house. Now, how will the price be followed with its new equipment? Let’s not forget that even in this category of bikers, we have been looking at the portfolio in a different way for some time..
