Both then and now, the ZZR 1400 is part of a race that has now almost disappeared from the motorcycle world: the super-powerful super-bombers. If only three remain today (this Kawa, the BMW K 1300 S and the Suzuki 1300 GSX-R), they are nonetheless emblematic figures, the last vestiges of a cult to power. and to excess. Akashi’s firm could have been content to leave it as it is in the catalog until a soft extinction…
But no. The ZZR is a monument at Kawa, and this new version is even more muscular, even more accomplished, even more exceptional..
When it came out, its powerful figure and feverish gaze shook many people. Kawa tweaked all of that a bit to give it more momentum, more dynamism, without really touching the general line. Except his face which becomes less difficult while gaining in aggressiveness. He threatened with the grace of a basking shark pierced with tarantula eyes; it threatens today with the lordship of a great white shark (the Carcharodon Carcharias). Less attention will be paid to the more protruding ventilation openings, which nevertheless improve the heat dissipation of the motor. When it comes to the exhausts, it is impossible to pass by as their volume has grown in importance.
A stylistic evolution after all sketchy, while below, the 1400 ZZR has been extensively revised.
And what we look closely at with this kind of machine is the engine. Already very strong, the 4-cylinder has gained 4 mm of stroke per cylinder (from 61 to 65 mm) to display an increase in displacement of 89 cm3. With a block of 1441 cm3, no need to tell you the monstrous torque that the box will have to digest. Kawa has also grafted its recent technological innovations and adapted the mappings to boost everything there. With that huge block, this new installment of the ZZR claims the colossal figure of 200 horsepower – and it even goes up to 210 with the forced air intake. A frightening figure in absolute terms, but which nevertheless leaves us somewhat unsatisfied. But why the hell? It is undoubtedly an enormous power … Because with its cm3 in addition and the technological progress, one hoped that the monster would gain much more, history to engrave a supremacy in the figures. However, it displays the same power as a ZX-10 R, yet cubing 30% less displacement. The ZZR will hurt the rear tire much more with its colossal torque of 16.4 mkg. The latter took advantage of the increase in displacement, with a gain of 1.4 mkg. Beyond the figures, the ZZR still allows itself to blow the competition and panic the fans of 400m DA: it goes under 10 seconds in this exercise and claims the planetary acceleration record for a production motorcycle..
More torque everywhere, more power at medium and high speeds, and to channel it all, the traction control (KTRC) selectable in 3 modes and 2 choices of injection mapping: full power or low power with 75% of the potato – judicious in the rain but stupid in France, where you will look smart with 75 horses on such a machine…
The ZZR 1400 is one of the very few motorcycles to benefit from an aluminum monocoque frame. To cash in the extra watts of the large boiler, it has been revised, as has the swing arm. New suspension settings are supposed to promote the sportiness of the machine without sacrificing stability at high speeds..
Some updates are to be reported on the dashboard and, it is practical enough to be reported, the functions of the LCD screen scroll via a stalk attached to the handlebars.
