In the category of customs midsize, 2 philosophies are opposed. Either the manufacturer develops a custom-type engine with low power but a lot of torque from the lowest revs (for example the Honda 600 Shadows), or he opts for an existing engine not necessarily the most suitable for the genre, but which will augur well. special character.
Kawasaki, which has a history very marked by its sports cars, has often designed its customs with this in mind. The EN 500 is no exception to this tradition.
First born in 450cc, the EN was powered by a half GPZ 900 Ninja. In 1990, he recovered the 500cc from the GPZ 500S which was no less sporty. The engine is still moderated for the occasion. But despite this softening cure, the twin still develops 55 of the 60 horsepower of the GPZ. This cavalry arrives a little more gradually than on the sports car, but the health is still there. The engine bangs under 2,500 revolutions / minute, but kept its brilliance at high revs. Small originality, the classic secondary transmission chain is here replaced by a much cleaner and quieter belt..
The cycle part, it is much more classic. The chassis preserves maneuverability despite the long fork and the consequent hunting. It’s a plus in town. On the other hand, if the frame is rigid and fairly neutral, the suspensions are not up to par on degraded coating. The braking part is correct without more and will be more than enough for the urban vocation of the EN.
Because if the engine engages to roll at a good pace (150 km / h cruising speed), the suspensions, the brakes, the comfort and the lack of protection limit it a little when it comes to leaving for long trips. The saddle is not very comfortable on long journeys and the double stage prevents you from changing position during a ride.
This small custom therefore prefers to be confined to the city, where its maneuverability and its sympathetic aesthetics highlight it. Kawasaki did not skimp on the chrome and the engine although looking much more modern than what we are used to seeing on a custom, fits perfectly with the line of small dragster.
Its saddle height of 715 mm made it accessible to as many people as possible, yet the EN 500 did not make a big splash. The arrival of basic rodsters such as the Bandit 400 (then 600), Zephyr 550 (and 750) and later the ER-5 did not really allow it to find its place among urban utility vehicles..
