The EN 500, called Vulcan by our American friends, is being modernized nicely. One of the cheapest customs on the market, its style changes trend and stretches with elegance. A longer and more rounded tank (+ 4 liters), the elimination of the seat backrest and the bevelled exhausts significantly refine the silhouette. The spoked rims give way to spoke models. Note the increase in weight, that the front brake disc gains 30 mm in diameter (300 mm now), that the indicators change place and appreciate the slimming regime of the rear light.
The little custom from Kawa draws its inspiration from the side of productions across the Atlantic, except the mill which, even if it remains a twin, is a parallel byclinder. The low rear part and the very inclined fork gives it a very “low rider” aspect, very nice for the eye. Improved impression when you get in the saddle and you discover the large speedometer fixed on the tank. Previously belt-driven like the Harleys, the transmission is now provided by a chain. Too bad, but we can not hope to benefit from the advantages of an Electra Glide on a small machine.
The engine, from the 500 GPZ, announces 9 hp less than the previous generation, loss compensated by the earlier arrival of power, and by a more demonstrative torque. Thus, the Japanese twin seems more formatted and more pleasant. Faithful to the custom, the chassis, without any particular defect, appreciates little bumps – the pilot will pay the price – The brakes are not the most reassuring in the event of heavy stress; it must be said that there is only one disc to stop the machine. Otherwise, the machine does its job well. For those who want to start in custom, the 500 EN is a very good choice, ready to become an authentic “Rider”.
