An entry-level motorcycle with so much cachet and charisma, it’s been a hell of a few years since we’ve seen it. The ER-6 is Kawasaki’s new hobbyhorse in this too forgotten segment of the basics which is nevertheless the gateway to almost all new bikers.. And although some new models have given the market a little boost recently, we have to admit that we expected something more fun in the category – here it is and it is beautiful this ER-6 n.
ER – A choice of designation that identifies it as a basic, but it is far from the ancient ER-5. There is especially this dress, very worked, very seductive, with stylistic references of the best effect and a visual identity that will be very popular. Radiator scoops similar (very) to those of the Benelli 1130 TnT, an under-machine Buell-style exhaust, a reinforced swingarm painted the same color as the fork sleeves, the tubular frame, and the same tees of fork are entitled to it; one of the colors offers these elements painted in red – I’m not telling you like that !
It’s not over yet, because Kawa has taken special care in fine-tuning the bike from all angles. A rear very inspired by the Z 750 S, petal brake discs as on the ZX-10 R and 636 R, an eccentric shock absorber on the right perfectly accessible, a robot face that makes its small effect, and an engine that cube 649 cm3.
Forgotten the ER-5 500! The new ER is a 6 and a half fitted with a twin parallel injection. Planned to meet future Euro 3 standards, is this carton a re-cubed version of the 500 from the GPZ, ER-5 and KLE or half of a large 4-cylinder of the brand? Well no, Kawa didn’t settle for that simple.
This is a new very compact unit that does not hesitate to borrow technologies found on more prestigious models of the brand. The advantage of the in-line arrangement of its cylinders is that it greatly contributes to the compactness of the machine. Both shorter than an L-shaped twin and narrower than a 4-legged engine, this engine architecture and its modern design allow this 650 to be less bulky than the ER-5’s twin. Not bad for a mill with 30% more cubing.
Its pretty housings will certainly house a cavalry in line with the presence of the machine. We can safely advance the power of 70 hp and a torque value approaching 7 mkg. Hopefully Kawa adds a sparkling character to it, which would be little more than the icing on the cake..
One of the major preoccupations of the Kawa engineers was to develop the ER-6 in such a way as to make it as user-friendly as possible. Optimized for agility, handling and ergonomics, it should be more than pleasant to sit on its handlebars, supported by a low saddle and certainly surprised by the smoothness of the bike. The dashboard, with soft lines, seems very complete. One criticism, however: the transponder lock seems absent.
As for the price, the manufacturer should adjust it between its base 500 and the Z 750, which would give a price of around € 6,000. At this price, Bandit 650 and CB 500 can already tremble, because the ER-6 prepares its landing shortly and the second wave of assault will be done with the reinforcement of an ABS – Arrival planned for the re-entry !
Once is not customary, we will start by listing the faults of the machine. Why ? Because it will go fast. Okay, I’m starting. This exhaust hidden under the engine, seen closely, it has nothing to envy that of a city car (beerrrkk …); and then, melody question, we saw better, less tasteless – N.B: we do not spend our life under the bike but on it, and the adaptables, what is it for?!? It vibrates a little (light) in the footrests, there is no electronic lock or fuel gauge, and worse…
And that’s all! I think I’ve done the trick. Wait, I didn’t say it was the best bike in the world – but this new Kawa has enough to quickly become the benchmark in the category. Apart from this mouth which appeals to everyone (curiosity is one of the first keys to success), the ER-6 takes great pride in its new twin. With 72 hp and 2 cylinders, it is in direct confrontation with the Suzuki SV. The latter seems a little more demonstrative in the first half of the tachometer but the Kawa bi-parallel offers more flexibility. Then, the revs are done with enthusiasm and liveliness. Pep, there is nothing better to wake you up in the morning. Good health like that allows you to attract the attention of a very large clientele.
Mid-race result: the bike has for it the fun of design and a playful mechanics. Okay, but the chassis still needs to be able to keep up. And there it is blessed bread for everyone. The bike is completely intuitive and can be driven with the finger and the eye, with disconcerting ease. The front axle guides the ER-6 with precision, the machine follows the rhythm in complete relaxation, the pilot benefits from all the attentions. Not only could he afford to pick flowers while scrubbing so well the bike reacts so well and naturally, but the Kawa also proves to him that it is very welcoming, with an excellent driving position, and a comfort of suspension which should be s. ” inspire the Suz SV.
Don’t worry, there is plenty left for the sport. Go up in the towers and play the selector, the small one enters the game. Tight virolos, incessant changes of angle, come back standing on the brakes (it brakes very well), the efficiency and the balance of the chassis allow to have fun and to adopt a generous behavior. Suddenly, young budding arsouilleurs will try to take out the screwdriver to indulge in 2-3 suspension adjustments … No luck for them, the Kawa only offers the preload adjustment, and only the back.
ZX-10R, Z 1000 and 750, VN 2000 … Kawasaki is really wringing the handle to take the lead in all segments. With the ER-6, the green giant once again gives a good kick in the anthill. A machine that has strength, a hell of a good little engine, potential in all areas and which promises us the best … It reminds me of a love of youth that has never died out !
