It had been a while since Kawa had raised the power limit of his 10R missile. Regularly improved by small touches, the current version of the Ninja receives in 2019 an engine optimization that will not go unnoticed for lovers of mechanics. If you can manage to take a look behind the radiator, you’ll see a nice red cylinder head cover. For a dose of tuning? Not at all. This means that the 4-cylinder benefits from a reworked cylinder head with pawl distribution. The block can thus take more turns and claim increased power. Three horses gained 500 laps higher with a maximum of 203 nags at 13,500 rpm. We also note a little more for the couple with 1 / 10th of mkg more. Want even more performance? Good thing, the cylinder head can now accommodate the nastier camshafts of the racing kit.
This edition presenting itself as the high-end counterpart of the Ninja, it needed premium elements. This year, a self-repairing paint has been added to certain parts of the trim, of the same type as that recently introduced by the 1000 H2. The tank and its sub-panels are covered with it. Not enough to erase scratches made by keys or a coin but enough to heal small scratches.
Interesting contrast that this prevention of the finish while the 10R never ceases to sharpen its teeth, and to offer strong experiences on the track as on the road.
Driving a big sports car on the road has always required a good dose of composure to exploit its potential without going into orbit. Big advances in electronics have recently made it possible to delegate part of the job. The Kawasaki ZX-10R has, like most hypersports, its big package of chips and silicon: traction control, Riding Modes, engine brake control, launch control, multi-axis inertial unit, ABS, etc. We can go further, especially to improve driving conditions on the road. And this is the mission of the ZX-10 R SE with its piloted suspensions.
The depreciation that reflects on its own is one of the big pluses of modern machines. With the relief of leaving the tools in the garage and being able to easily adjust the settings. This ZX-10R inaugurates the first semi-active system at Kawa, called KECS (Kawasaki Electronic Control Suspension). With this, the Superbike Ninja will be able to read the road, adjust in real time and offer a feeling and a welcome efficiency to road riders. But how does it work ?
The manufacturer of Akashi worked with Showa to develop this technology. First, collect most of the parts of the excellent BFFF cartridge fork and BFRC shock absorber. Then, graft the meninges of an ultra-fast controlled damping and transform the whole with very reactive technique.
Concretely, every millisecond, sensors integrated in the fork and the shock absorber inform the electronic control unit of the KECS about the speed of travel and the compression. To complete the information, the inertial unit provides information on the acceleration or deceleration of the machine every 10 milliseconds. The KECS acts according to these data by operating the solenoid valves which will take care of adjusting the compression and expansion in a fraction of a second. A blink of an eye is at best 1 hundredth of a second. The control valves on the 10R SE go 10 times faster with single-stage direct-drive control. The reaction time is given for 1 ms, which is much faster than stepper motors or double-stage pilot valves. Thus, depending on the profile of the road and the dynamics of the bike, the damping reacts even faster than a human nerve impulse..
Precisely, as a human, we do not always wake up in the same mood. Driving is the same. Better that she adapt. To suit this, KECS offers 3 depreciation methods. ROAD, with a more flexible type of damping; TRACK, for more firmness; and MANUAL, where the rider determines his basic settings in 15 levels for compression and rebound. Then the electronics and sensors react according to preferences. The settings have been adapted to the new power of the mill.
Proud of its adaptive suspensions, the ZX-10R SE nevertheless demonstrates a certain discretion with a black-gray color which is reminiscent of that of the former ZX-10RR (the ‘Winter Tests’ decoration). Moreover, she did not hesitate to prick her Marchesini forged aluminum rims and her Up & Down shifter. A few touches of green and a special SE plate on the top of the tank identify this electronically reinforced motorcycle. On the scale, the SE accuses 2 kilos more; ridiculous. Engine side, the cavalry always present with its large 203 nags in the 4 cylinders, offering the best of itself in high revs.
The ZX-10R family can now be enjoyed in 3 models. Standard (KRT) for large caliber pilots, RR to engage in competition, and SE to benefit from self-reactive damping. One way to go tease the R1M and Fireblade SP. You won’t get Ohlins but a faster order reaction time. And for a very different extra cost. The ZX-10R SE will still cost around 5,000 euros more than the basic version.
