She had disappeared … to come back better, more conquering and dapper than ever. Who ? But let’s see the W 650! Sorry, the W 800 !!! The one that launched the vintage niche at the end of the 20th century is back in business, with a bigger engine, more poise, and also faithful to the spirit of its elder.

Let’s go back to 1999. Kawasaki launches the W 650, a very faithful copy of the famous Bonneville by Triumph. Same very British line, same type of engine with a parallel twin, same displacement with 650 cm3 of playing field for the connecting rods. Kawa sees it more as a modernized version of its 1965 W1. But whatever. The W 650 offers all the charm of a 1960s Englishwoman with the reliability of a modern machine. A “classic”, launched well before the craze of recent years, and which was eclipsed in 2006.

Back in the spotlight since 2011. Always this charming silhouette, this Bonnie profile and this taste of the streets of London, at random from a ride in the fleecy mist. Fun revival game: the W 650 revived the Bonneville 650, then the Hinckley factory revived their Bonneville by releasing it in 800, then the W returned a few years later in 800 as well. Would the engineers Kawa and Triumph gaze at each other in a pub without recognizing each other? ?
Either way, the style remains and that’s good; we could not imagine it otherwise. The sausage pots are always there, as are the thick, flat, and nostalgic saddle, the chrome fenders, the spoked rims, the fork protection gaiters…. She hasn’t changed, not aged, not sleepy.

During her convalescence, Mrs. W took the opportunity to review some points of detail. Oh, nothing transcendent, just a little powder on the nose: new round indicators, a very classy raised W symbol on the tank, chrome headlamp plates, new shock absorbers, chrome also on the fork sleeves. Stop, stop with the almond paste leaves; the center is where the cake has more cream. More displacement (98 cm3), more horsepower, and increased torque whose maximum speed is reached at just 2,000 rpm. The crankshaft timing is 360 °, like the old one – the pistons move up and down at the same time. Enough to ensure a more than nice poum-poum. In addition, this twin, it is not ugly to look at, with its distribution entrusted to a clearly visible side shaft, cooling fins, metal that seems almost alive.

The braking remains of the nostalgia branch with its rear drum, more recent but not sporty with a single disc and a juxtaposed 2-piston caliper. The frame is the most classic: tubular steel cradle, associated with a swingarm the opposite of what we see today in Superbikes. OK, a hypersport engine would twist it in half at the slightest throttle, but the W 800 is for the ride and the charm of the sixties. And for that, the chassis will be sufficient.
