The evolution of sports machines is moving towards ever more efficiency, sometimes to the detriment of road applications. You only have to see the GSX-R 600: an exhilarating and bluffing pistarde on the track but not really suitable for road use. More specialization brings closer to exclusivity. The new generation ZX-6R gives a nice thumbs up to this pity. The Ninja evolves to win the championship without separating from its road skills. Hats off, Mr Kawa.
First step: the silhouette. This second version of the 600 Ninja seems to have matured without denying its origins. The family spirit is retained, with a trend inspired by the new ZX-9R. Thinner, both muscular and sprinter, she evolves without upsetting, as if to better hide the profound changes that have taken place within her..
From the outside, the engine does not appear to have changed. And for good reason: Distribution, housings, gearbox have hardly been modified. Let’s put ourselves in the place of fresh air to better understand what has been done -> Aspirated by an optimized Ram Air then circulating more efficiently in the ducts, the oxidizer arrives on a rail of Mikuni carburetors (replacing the Keihin ) 36 mm equipped with a K-tric system. The latter communicates information on the throttle opening to the ignition box. The box then chooses a pre-memorized curve in order to optimize the ignition advance. More than the search for power, the engine manufacturers then focused on making the mill more reliable. Various modifications allow the engine to be at the same time more efficient, lighter and stronger.
The moulbif is the expression of the joy of living. Fiery, expressive, powerful, his thrust is strong but also progressive and immediately reactive. No matter where the tachometer needle is, there is always a response to the throttle.
To use this boiler, Kawa also focused on the chassis. This is even where the machine has evolved the most because between version 95 and 98, almost no part is similar. The most obvious element is the fork, which goes from 41 to 46 mm in diameter, straighter by 1/2 °, with an offset of the lower triple trees of 5 mm. This results in a 15mm reduction in the wheelbase. The frame rails, steering column and other elements are reinforced, as evidenced by the axle of the wheels which increase to 25 mm. In addition to the swingarm with a different structure, we note the change in the braking system: the discs are thinner by 0.5 mm and the calipers are Tokico with 6 pistons (4 previously). Many elements have been lightened, such as the fork, the wheels, the swingarm, the instrumentation (slightly different with small digital counters), the fairing, etc….
Whether on the track or on the road, the ZX-6R has gained in efficiency. A lighter and more rigid front allows faster angle changes as well as better control on heavy braking, and the suspensions are revised for more rigor. Diving into the bend with more ease, the little Ninja enjoys the luxury of being serene and very efficient on the circuit while being one of the best (if not the best) 600 sports on the market. Faced with a CBR or a GSX-R, it is a winner on all counts. As we said at the beginning, most of the time, optimizing a machine for the track makes it more exclusive, to the detriment of comfort and pleasure on the road. The new ZX-6R didn’t have to make that choice: it’s better everywhere.
