The fans were thrilled, the drivers had a lot of fun. Accordingly, MotoAmerica has now decided to expand King of the Baggers into a complete racing series. The Bagger racers will return to the track for three rounds of the American Superbike Championship.

“To be honest, the MotoAmerica King of the Baggers’ debut race at Laguna Seca went better than we had dreamed of”, said Wayne Rainey, President of MotoAmerica. Accordingly, it was decided to turn the subject further. The new racing series covers the whole country. They also hope to attract new teams and drivers.

Harley wins the title

Harley works rider Kyle Wyman was not impressed by Indian’s first win and took the top podium on Road Amercia in Wisconsin and also at the season finale in Laguna Seca. This makes Wyman the King of the Baggers 2021 on a Harley. Second place goes to main competitor Tyler O’Hara on his S&S-Indian Challenger. Third place in the championship goes to the private team Vance & Claim Hines Harley-Davidson with driver Hayden Gillim. Fun fact: Superbike champion Ben Bostrom started with the number 155 on a Feuling Harley in Laguna Seca. 5th place was the result for the old master.

Indian dominates first race

On May 2, 2021, the first race of the King of the Baggers took place on the Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta course. Mission Foods S&S Cycle Team dominated the weekend: With the victory on Sunday in 12: 58.498 minutes, the team confirmed the performance of the Indian Challenger with Tyler O’Hara in the saddle, which was already apparent in the free practice sessions and the qualification. Second place goes to the Harley works team with driver Kyle Wyman. In a disguise to disguise finish, the Indian was able to prevail against the Harley after eight laps with a wafer-thin lead of 0.454 seconds. The fastest lap on the four-kilometer circuit in Atlanta with many high-speed passages and few corners was only 1: 36.392 for the winning Indian. The second-placed Harley remains just behind with 1: 36.651. Third place again goes to an Indian team from Roland Sands Design: The RSD Challenger needed a total of 13: 24.250 for the eight laps, the fastest race lap was set in 1: 39.626. So each much slower than the factory Harley and the winning Indian. Six out of seven starters were able to finish the race.

Indian sponsors and repairs

Indian Motorcycles now officially joins the King of the Baggers and presents itself as a sponsor of the series. Furthermore, Indian provides a workshop truck for each of the races in order to be able to offer the Indian drivers the necessary factory support. In 2020 Indian was still officially racing with a converted one Indian Challenger and won. With the S&Last year’s winner, Tyler O’Hara, will compete again in 2021.

Fueling the bonfire of one of the oldest motorcycle rivalries – Harley-Davidson versus Indian – the series starts April 30th through May 2nd, 2021 at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia, and ends July 9th and 11th on the famous Laguna Seca in California with the infamous Corkscrew chicane. In between there is a race weekend between June 11th and 13th at the Road America Ring in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Conclusion

When 300-kilogram chunks are moved across the racetrack by experts, that’s pretty spectacular. In addition, all Big Twin drivers and fans can be tied to the racing action in this way. Smart plan, nice to look at and in the end Harley-Davidson wins.
