KTM 1090 Adventure in the driving report
The new entry-level adventure
KTM pops the corks and switches the 1090 to free passage. 125 instead of the previous 95 PS, the entry-level adventure should bring more KTM feeling, more driving fun and better opportunities on the market than the sealed off 1050. The first ride with the new KTM 1090 Adventure.
A message of success comes along KTM the other. Everything that you touch in Mattighofen succeeds – you might think. But sometimes, albeit rarely, the Austrians mess things up. And already we are on the topic, namely with the 1050 Adventure, which will be offered from 2015. Actually a pretty decent motorcycle. The idea of offering a machine with a manageable performance below the Adventure series with at least 150 hp at that time was basically completely correct. After all, an expansive company like KTM wants to, and has to, fish for customers from a more sensible clientele.

The new entry-level adventure
V2 engine now delivers 125 hp
In addition, the fact that the elaborate engine was electronically throttled to only 95 hp was not particularly well received. Who wants an orange machine with asthmatic symptoms? Especially since narrowed channels or tame control times did not form the cork, but only the electronics, which simply did not open the throttle valves at full throttle. An engine that actually can, but is not allowed to: that hurts. Uncorked 1050 engines are said to have produced around 115 hp at that time. At least the throttle motor delivered a lot of torque with very good manners – we don’t want to re-map and talk badly now. So now the second attempt in which the marketing strategists do not want to repeat previous mistakes. You have learned about the engine. The V2 of the KTM 1090 Adventure is the old acquaintance of the 1050 in terms of hardware, but can now finally let 125 horses gallop freely. There were small changes in timing, combustion chambers and in the periphery. Which were due anyway, after all, it was important to comply with Euro 4. He manages this without major interventions, even the exhaust system remained unchanged.
A quick look back
In terms of performance and character, this is definitely a completely different matter with the KTM 1090 Adventure. A quick look back: When KTM launched the Adventure V2 series in 2003 with the 950 series, the enthusiasm was enormous, even at MOTORRAD. This wonderful, fun engine produced “only” 98 hp. The current 1050 has a similar speed-oriented characteristic, but pushes almost 30 hp more and has now made quantum leaps in terms of smoothness. And that’s a lot of fun on the winding pass roads at the foot of Mount Etna. Wonderful how the “little” V2 greedily pounds away at every speed, sprints lively through the speed range and gleefully turns into the limiter. The fact that there is much less pressure below than with the 1290s does not at all reduce the driving pleasure on winding country roads of the third order. The smaller one is just a rotary motor, while the larger one can do everything, but in practice is the torque motor.
KTM 1090 Adventure looks handier and lighter
The chassis with the narrower tires contributes to the agile character of the KTM 1090 Adventure. It looks more manageable and lighter than the actual weight difference, which is only around 10 kg, suggests. We already knew the phenomenon from the 1050s. As recently as the Metzeler Tourance Next – extremely cooperative tires with really amazing cold and wet grip are used as tires. Unfortunately, the somewhat plain WP spring elements have also remained. As before, there is absolutely nothing to adjust on the fork, just the spring base and traction damping at the rear. The basic set-up is okay in solo mode, but the response should be better. But that doesn’t bother even on the pothole slopes at the foot of Mount Etna. After all, you always know where you are.
Progress is in the details
The “small” Adventure looks a bit plain, however, when the large machine with all its high-tech equipment is next to it. There is hardly any paint on the small one, instead there are plenty of plastic surfaces, decorated here and there with stickers. Doing without the semi-active suspension hurts less, and the fantastic Bosch display hurts more. The old VDO dashboard with its somewhat cumbersome operation literally looks pretty pale and old-fashioned. Cornering ABS does not exist either, as the necessary lean angle sensors are missing. The braking system is based on simpler Brembo components, which of course can be felt in feedback and braking performance. But after all, KTM paid dearly for all of this with the 1290s. Which brings us back to pricing policy. The KTM 1090 Adventure costs around 13,000 euros without extras, about as much as the old 1050. However, the price gap to the large machine has changed. After the elimination of the 1190 Adventure, the cheapest 1290 is now a proud 3,600 euros more expensive. Although the motorcycle is almost the same in absolute terms, the situation is now relatively different. And there is definitely progress in the details: the mirrors are now the same on all models, and the rear frame is also painted black.
