KTM has gone further than anyone would have imagined, or feared. Make a streetfighter with big potatoes, we saw a few. But to dare a machine far beyond reason, with power that overflows in all directions, torque to crush walls, a weight worthy of sports and an unbounded combativeness, only a Doctor Gang azimuted with kerosene protoxide would have embarked on the challenge. The superlative of madness now has a name: 1290 Super Duke R.
Lean muscle, prominent fangs, adrenaline as the only line of inspiration, the 1290 SuperDuke is nothing but a pack of nerves stretched throughout style. It is aggressiveness in its purest form, which does not forget to be chic with a powerful single-sided arm which is installed at the rear; the first from KTM. A real beast ready to bite you without even having approached it. And when we learn what the boiler imprisoned here has in store for us, we must equip ourselves with a large dose of courage and madness to dare to turn the handle fully..
Take the motor of the RC8-R sports car, add a hundred cc to it to close the deal at 1,301 cc, spit out 180 horsepower and you get a one-way ticket to the fury. 2016 and Euro4 have mixed in with the chain reaction – the monster has adapted to these more drastic standards, costing it 7 hp. Not much for the neutron reactor still equipped with 173 cannons. The couple is no longer a punch factory; on this Super Duke, it’s a huge slap dispenser. There is almost 15 mkg to support – crazy thing! To be more precise, the torque peaks at 14.7 mkg, much more than that of a Ducati 1199. At 2500 rpm, 10 mkg are already available. As if you had the maximum torque of a CB 1000 R … after a few mm of rotation of the right handle. Cold sweats and maxi bandoche guaranteed. Katoche announced only 7.2 seconds to go from 0 to 200 km / h. It’s the same time as a Bugatti Veyron and 2 seconds better than a Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. Fortunately, the magic of electronics makes it possible to curb the (too?) Many watts of the Austrian twin..
At this level, we will no longer speak of electronic assistance but of a straitjacket, more or less open in the back. Thanks to the ride by wire handle, the most monstrous of Duke, and streetfighters on the market, offers you several driving programs. Does it float or are you not very optimistic? The “Rain” calms the power, allows for a smooth ride and the traction control is very preventive. Good weather ? We switch to “Street” mode, we have fun, it’s sporty at will with the rate of control going well. Fancy a big 8? All you have to do is engage the “Sport” to let go of the beast and play with the Supermotard-type ABS, a Bosch 9ME program that allows gliding from behind and drifting in profusion. There remains one last version: freedom. ABS and Traction Control can be deactivated – Enough to leave you alone in an African reserve with a hungry panther as only company.
There is indeed a cage, but not for imprisoning the beast; to tame it effectively. Like any KTM, the machine is fitted with a unique trellis frame with chrome-molybdenum steel tubes. Good as a huge 48mm WP fork, Brembo monobloc radial M50 brake calipers (same as on the Ducati 1299 Panigale and MV-Agusta F4 1000) and a driving position with a thoroughly studied ergonomics.
KTM seems to be making a habit of installing ultra-complete dashboards. On the 1290 SuperDuke, 2 digital windows and a large tachometer provide a ton of information. Too bad this handset is the same as the 1190 Adventure; we would have a more original, more bellicose design.
I don’t want to alarm the population, but … This cannonball weighs only 189 kilograms dry. A roadster with a power-to-weight ratio of almost 1, we’ve never seen it before. It promises us a big top and big sensations. Cherry on the cake: KTM announces a 15,000 km spacing between each service.
The price would almost be a deterrent but certainly not a problem for the fading people who want to try this crazy thing. The concern is that it would be better to have a good technical background to train the 1290 Superduke R if one tries to drive without safeguards. Completely oblivious and totally exciting, the KTM 1290 Super Duke R has only one desire: to mess everything up !
