KTM Freeride 250 F in the test

Play mobile for hobby off-roaders

The KTM Freeride is currently available with a 250cc four-stroke engine. The concept is not aimed at off-road competitions, but rather at leisure activities in forests and meadows. How well does it hit its target?

Every crisis also harbors a new opportunity, as the saying goes – and in the case of the KTM Freeride right. Because originally the hybrid of Trialer and Enduro was designed exclusively as an electric motorcycle. But because the global financial crisis cooled down the entrepreneurial daring for avant-garde test balloons in the planning phase, the e-mobile turned into a combustion-powered freeride. First with the single from the successful enduro 350 EXC-F, then as a 250cc two-stroke version. And everything turned out fine. Business in Mattighofen has long been running brilliantly again, electric freeride has been whispering since 2015, and both of its crackling sisters will be revised for the coming season, or shall we say streamlined. Because the Euro 4 standard has gotten rid of the two-stroke edition. And the four-stroke model now has the 250 single instead of the 350. It comes from the quarter-liter sports enduro, the 250 EXC-F, which was only heavily revised for the 2017 season.

The electric freeride

Even if the combustion engines have now outstripped it – originally the freeride was planned exclusively as an electric motorcycle. Now the Stollen-Stromer with a larger battery goes into the second round.

Big train station on the small airfield. Specifically: In the legendary Hangar 7 at Salzburg Airport, the top KTM executive floor presents the latest developments in the field of electromobility. No E-Super-Duke, no Strom-Supercrosser, but simply the second generation of the Freeride E-XC introduced in 2015. The Spielmobil will remain the most powerful e-bike from KTM for the foreseeable future. Unusual for the otherwise ambitious Austrians. One could also say: In view of the development status in battery technology that is still expandable, it is simply sensible. However, the electric range is to be expanded downwards by 2020 to include race-ready youth crossers.

The upgraded E-Freeride still benefits from the advances in research. With 3.9 kWh, the lithium-ion battery has at least 50 percent more capacity than the 2.6 kWh battery previously used – with identical dimensions and almost the same price. Speaking of price. Instead of buying the battery (2995 euros), e-mobilists can now also lease the power pack. After a deposit of 569 euros, the battery with charger costs a monthly rental fee of 49 euros. The Freeride E-XC, which has been boosted from 16 to 18 kW (24 PS) in the new model year and is equipped with the water-cooled electric motor that has already been used, costs 7695 euros without a battery.
