Dutch builds super superbikes

KTM itself discontinued the RC8 Superbike in 2018, so the Dutchman Daan @ daan99999 built himself a new RC8 with the engine of the 1290 Super Duke.

D.he Dutchman Daan (@ Daan99999) is obviously into models from KTM, as can be seen on his Instagram account. But what the Austrians deliver in series does not always seem to be enough for him, or no longer.

No more KTM superbikes

This means the first and only KTM superbike, the 1190 RC8, which was manufactured from 2008 to 2015. The specially developed RC8-V2 initially develops 155 hp and 120 Nm torque from 1,148 cm³. In the later subsequent R variant, the displacement increased to 1,195 cm³, the output increased to up to 175 hp and 123 Nm. In a track variant, even 180 hp were available. After only one generation of models, however, KTM put the issue of road superbikes back on the books.

Adapted full electronics package

Daan didn’t want to accept that. On his own, he married an old RC8 with the engine from a 2018 Super Duke R in a 16 month long. Even its complete electronics package went into the new superbike. This means that the KTM RC 1290 has ride-by-wire, cornering ABS, cruise control, traction control, quickshifter with blipper function, tire pressure monitoring system, launch control and a track mode that is a bit more down-to-earth. The software adaptation required for this alone required an infinite amount of time and Hirmschmalz. Daan, of course, would like to get the whole package ready for approval.

Frame adapted, single-sided swing arm fitted

Of course, it wasn’t enough to put the new V2 in the old chassis. Since the two-cylinder of the Super Duke is more powerful than the old RC8 motor, new retaining plates had to be made and changes made to the frame. In addition, the delicious single-sided swing arm of the Super Duke has been adapted. Likewise their 48 USD fork with newly manufactured triple clamps, their wheels and the front brake system. A Ducati Monster 696 contributes parts of the rear brake system. In addition, parts from various other KTMs were also transferred to the RC 1290. Even the Super Duke’s double LED headlights were fitted into the fairing.

The bottom line is that the KTM RC 1290 built by Daan has an output of 177 hp and a maximum torque of 141 Nm. Only Daan can judge whether this is worth the effort.
