Here is the cross in its most muscular version. The KTM 450 SX-F has proven itself over the years in the main world championships. The 2019 vintage reaches new heights in performance and handling. It features a new, extremely compact single overhead camshaft cylinder head and the latest electronic fuel injection system.. Powered by a 63 hp engine of rare efficiency, this 450 cc is the fastest motocross ever built by KTM.
Motor
The 450cc engine is the most competitive in the KTM motocross lineup. Considerably redesigned on the 2019 version, it has again undergone a slimming and slimming cure. It features a new, extremely compact single overhead camshaft cylinder head and the latest electronic fuel injection system. The impressive 63 hp of power is thus distributed more efficiently over the entire rev range. Even with the very beneficial electric starter, this model remains the lightest 450cc on the motocross market..
Cylinder head
The centerpiece of the SOHC (single overhead camshaft) engine, the 450 SX-F’s new cylinder head is much more compact. It has been lightened by 500 grams and lowered by 15 mm. These modifications made it possible to better centralize the masses and reach new heights in terms of handling. The improved surface area of the new overhead camshaft (which is now closer to the center of gravity) and the shorter valve opening time have resulted in improved engine responsiveness. The four ultra-light titanium valves (intake: 40mm, exhaust: 33mm) are operated using ultra-rigid rockers. The rockers are coated with a DLC coating on the intake side to allow extremely high speeds of up to 11,500 rpm. New low-friction chain guides have also been designed to withstand the increased engine power. New top-shaft configuration provides even greater power deployment to leave the competition behind.
Crankshaft
The 450 SX-F’s crankshaft is ideally positioned, close to the center of gravity, to better centralize the masses. It uses a short connecting rod, contributing to the compactness of the engine and its even more responsive character. The whole is perfectly balanced. The inertia forces are ideally balanced to promote traction and driving pleasure. The big end bearing has two half-shells force-fitted directly to the crankshaft pin, and the oil supply is provided by the engine’s pressurized lubrication system. This design increases engine life and allows longer crankshaft service intervals; a benefit for the customer in terms of time, effort and costs.
Engine housings and covers
Using the high pressure die casting process results in a relatively compact and even lighter crankcase, while maintaining strength and durability. The crankcase design enabled KTM engineers to bring the shaft assemblies closer to the center of gravity, so as to better centralize the masses and enhance driving pleasure. Another interesting innovation to keep the engine as radiant as in its early days: engine crankcase covers with an elaborate surface structure, intended to reduce the wear caused by the rider’s boots.
Gearbox
The transmission of the 450 SX-F version 2019 has been redesigned to increase its durability. On the other hand, it was not considered useful to change the ratios, perfectly adapted to the power delivered by the large displacement engine. All 4-stroke engines are fitted with an engaged gear sensor which allows the engine characteristics to be matched in each gear, depending on the engine load. The “zero dirt” design of the selector prevents the accumulation of mud or dust at the level of the joint.
Engine management
Keihin Electronic Fuel Injection Engine Management System features a new 44mm injection body. The unique position of the injector ensures excellent atomization of fuel and air entering the combustion chamber. The engine is all the more lively and generous when opening the throttle. For added convenience, independent adjustment mechanisms have been provided for cold start and idle. The MAP (absolute pressure sensor) probe, which has been tightly sealed, makes the system even more reliable. The modifications to the gas cable were intended to simplify the routing of the cables and make them more accessible. The control unit (ECU) of the 2019 models offers new mappings adapted to the new design of the exhaust and the cylinder head, with the aim of better managing the traction control and the departure control. To deliver maximum power, it allows the characteristics of the engine to be adapted to each speed, according to the data communicated by the gear sensor engaged..
Cylinder and piston
The cylinder, with a 95mm bore, accommodates a lightweight box-in-box piston of the highest quality which helps to reduce vibrations and increase the overall level of engine performance. The compression ratio (12.75: 1) and the reduced oscillating masses result in an engine that is both powerful and extremely responsive..
Balance shaft
The side-mounted balance shaft fulfills a dual function in that it perfectly compensates for the oscillating masses and at the same time drives the water pump. Free from annoying vibrations, the bike offers unmatched handling flexibility, even at high revs.
Clutch
The 450 SX-F is fitted with a heavy-duty DDS (Damped Diaphragm Steel) clutch developed by KTM. This features a wear-free steel clutch housing and heat-resistant clutch discs. The use of a diaphragm spring instead of the usual coil springs also gives it greater flexibility. The diaphragm spring also has the advantage of being compact, which makes it possible to integrate a damping system in the clutch hub, to gain traction and durability. The Brembo hydraulic clutch system is also distinguished by its precision and progressiveness..
Electric starter
The electric starter, standard on the KTM 450 SX-F, uses a proven drive system and Mitsuba’s robust electric motor. This device has proven its usefulness time and time again: its foolproof reliability saves precious time and spares a lot of effort at crucial times..
Mapping selector on the handlebars
All Katoche 4-stroke SX models feature a mapping selector·handy on the handlebars, which allows you to act on traction control and departure control and to switch between power curves (Standard <-> Advanced). Traction control is a unique function with a new setting on the 2019 models. It guarantees more efficient traction and better control of the bike during acceleration phases, especially on demanding tracks. This function can be activated, even in full action, by means of the map selector·on the handlebars. When the engine is at idle, all you have to do is press both switches simultaneously to activate the start control as well, and thus leap out of the gate more quickly. Thanks to a new set-up, the starting control can now take advantage of the traction control to limit wheel slip and gain traction. In addition to standard engine modes, the mapping selector provides access to other engine modes for maximum stroke options.
Cooling
Maintaining optimum engine temperature is essential to ensure consistent power delivery. For this purpose, the 450 SX-F can count on new radiators lowered by 12 mm compared to its predecessor. This position, perfectly suited to the design of the new spoilers, lowers the center of gravity and improves ergonomics. Thanks to computational fluid mechanics (CFD) computational simulation calculations and the clever cooling system implemented, this innovative system ensures that engine components are kept at the ideal temperature to guarantee the highest level of performance, whatever the are the conditions. The special protections fitted to the radiators not only serve to protect them from projections of stones and other debris, but also to distribute the impact force of the shock around the radiators..
Quiet
The new exhaust system, provided on all 4-stroke models, gives the engine a smoothness and liveliness that are hard to match. It has a new exhaust manifold (specific to the model) and a small additional chamber, that is to say an evolved resonator called FDH (Flow Design Header). The silencer benefits from a new aluminum casing and a new end cap. The interior of the silencer has also been reworked. The new structure allows the exhaust to be removed without having to remove the shock absorber and facilitates access to the latter. It has another advantage from the point of ergonomics, because it refines the silhouette of the motorcycle while respecting the regulatory noise emission levels..
Frame
The 450 SX delivers titanic torque and requires a heavy-duty frame to withstand the engine’s prodigious power. The 2019 vintage inherits a new high-tech steel frame intended to increase the weight-to-power ratio of the bike, without compromising its strength and durability. Its great flexibility allows it to withstand the biggest shocks without batting an eyelid and reinforces the agility and stability of the motorcycle at high speed. The chassis also benefited from several innovations such as ‘zero dirt’ footrests and optional composite skid shoe mounting brackets..
Framework
The new frame of the KTM 450 SX-F is better able to withstand the forces generated by the overpowered engine. As with the rest of the SX 2019 range, it consists of hydroformed chrome-molybdenum steel tubes, assembled by automated welding, in order to guarantee the highest levels of quality and resistance. Its greater rigidity contributes to the excellent handling of the bike. The excellent cohesion with the suspensions also offers the perfect compromise between comfort and stability at high speed. The “zero dirt” footrests benefit from a self-cleaning system that is as simple as it is effective. As these are no longer likely to jam when brought back into position, you remain in full control of the situation, whatever the conditions. The frames of all 2019 SX-F 4-stroke models feature three new brackets to facilitate the mounting of an optional composite skid plate (offered in the KTM PowerParts accessory line). The frame of all 2019 SX models inherits a very durable powder coating (like on KTM Factory machines) and standard frame guards. The rear buckle, made of lightweight aluminum, has been lengthened by 40mm to improve the stability of the rear shell and promote mobility in the saddle.
Swinging arm
The 450 SX-F benefits from a new one-piece swingarm, obtained by high pressure die casting. This gives it the strength it needs to withstand the harsh conditions of motocross and the brutal torque of a 450cc. The additional 5 mm of play in the axle housing allows the wheelbase to be adjusted as well as possible depending on the conditions. All this while keeping the weight to a minimum. The chain measurement marks shown on the swingarm are visible from above, which greatly facilitates adjustments.
Wheels
Equipped with ultra-light CNC machined hubs and premium Excel rims, the wheels of all SX models guarantee maximum stability despite a limited weight. The aluminum spoke heads on the 2019 models have been revised to limit the frequency at which the spokes need to be retensioned. The wheels are fitted with the latest generation Dunlop Geomax MX 3S tires, to maximize power transfer to the ground and gain stability.
Front suspension
All full-size SX models feature the ultra-light WP AER 48 fork. The legs of this 48mm inverted air fork have different function, damping functions are on the right, the air spring is on the left. The left fork leg has a dual chamber and air cartridge system to prevent pressure loss. Should the outer seal ever leak, the pressure exerted inside the inner cartridge will keep the motorcycle in its normal position. The extremely easy to adjust air spring can be adjusted to the weight of the rider using a single valve and the air pump supplied with the motorcycle. The right fork leg includes a cartridge specifically designed to meet the demands of the single damping arm design and can be adjusted to suit track conditions or rider preferences. All you have to do is turn the dial 30 notches to the desired position (compression up and rebound down). New damping settings on 2019 models improved front axle control and feel.
Rear suspension
The DDC shock absorber, present on all SX models, has been developed taking into account the new architecture of the frame and the swingarm, as well as the link system and the AER 48 front fork. Beyond its purely functional aspect , this little gem seduces by the care taken in the finishes, and in particular by its high-quality machined and anodized components. The settings and the main piston inside the shock have been revised to improve damping characteristics along with the new nose gear setting. Fully configurable in high speed and low speed compression, it can be adapted specifically to track conditions or rider preferences.
Brakes
State-of-the-art Brembo brakes are standard equipment on KTM motocross bikes. Combined with Wave brake discs renowned for their lightness, they provide the braking power expected by the most daring riders..
Fuel tank
The ultra-light polyethylene tank has a capacity of 7.0 liters. Tank cap with internal thread ensures easy and reliable closing.
Air filter housing
The KTM 450 SX-F’s air filter housing has been completely redesigned to optimize flow dynamics. Associated with the new intake snorkels, it ensures an exceptional power deployment and level of acceleration. In addition to the obvious performance gain, the new design also serves to better protect the air filter against clogging. The rigid support for the large Twin-Air air filter has been designed to minimize installation errors. As on previous models, filter maintenance is carried out in record time and without tools, an original feature, typically KTM.
Handlebar
All full-size SX models feature the same super strong aluminum tapered handlebar, manufactured by NEKEN. Two positions are possible for the handlebar trigger guard with shock absorber pads. Right: an ODI vulcanized handle available as standard; on the left: an ODI lock-on handle as comfortable as it is practical, thanks to its mounting system without glue or wire. The handlebar foam has also been revised as well as the hand guard which is now much easier to put on or take off. The characteristics of the handlebars and grips have been studied to ensure an excellent grip and to maintain total control of the machine..
Software and electronics
Even if the engine of the 450 SX-F develops a demonic power of 63 HP, it remains entirely controllable. In addition to the mechanical elements intended to channel this energy, the pilot can count on an electronic pack to dose it with maximum precision. The mapping selector·on the handlebars allows you to act on traction control and departure control and select different power curves. Optimizing power and torque required many hours of work. Transferring this energy to the ground requires, however, state-of-the-art electronics. Activated by a simple button, the proven electric starter makes it possible to deal with any eventuality in motocross.
