Nothing was calm. Under the shadow of bits of rubber and road, the threat grew. But the mid-size roadsters were so busy rocking the thrills that they didn’t see a quarrelsome pair of fangs ready to pounce. A mechanical organism designed to bite the spine and turn the driver into an adrenaline junkie. After a particularly promising prototype, KTM unpacks a shock grenade: the 790 Duke.
The offensive will be direct, energized and explosive. As KTM knows how to do. Which comes to confront the MT-09, Street Triple, Z 900, and a whole series of brawlers ensuring the bulk of the market. The challenge is major, and the present risk of breaking the rods.
Except that for the orange brand, each challenge is only a step in its ascent. The 790 Duke is a perfect illustration of this. Nicknamed “the scalpel”, the machine catches the eye as in the heat. With a design almost identical to the proto presented at the end of 2016, the desire to go powder on the road is instantaneous. To the delight of thrill seekers, they do not find themselves facing a big 690 but a small 1290. The latter being one of the most violent streetfighters in production, the adrenaline rush is in full swing. With hooked sides, a psychopathic bug headlight, strained nerves, and a remarkably well-integrated bevel muffler, this Duke is not a nice one. But a motorcycle that comes to break the face and shake the purses (I’m not talking about the price).
Moon great qualities of Katoches, it is the ardor of its mechanics. We are entitled to expect the best, especially since for this hunting model, the Austrian engineers have created a brand new engine. A parallel twin of 799 cm3, the first of the brand. That’s good, the category accommodates a beautiful array of engine architecture (twin in L, 3 cylinders, CP3 crossplane, 4 legs). To stand out is a blessing. Modern in design as usual, the LC8c features 4 valves per cylinder, dual ACT, injection, ride-by-wire, forged pistons, dual balance shaft and anti-dribble clutch. It is given for 105 horsepower at 9000 rpm; and the cannons bred at Mattighoffen are closer to the thoroughbred than to the beast of burden. The torque reaches 8.8 mkg at 8000 rpm. With these figures, the 790 Duke turns out to be a little less powerful than the stars of the segment. But the mechanics offer a good performance in terms of its engine architecture. And above all, this future fan of road surgery will make other arguments: a part-cycle of joy and a character of badass.
Steel or aluminum? The two. For the rear loop, we took aluminum to make a single piece. It holds the entire stern, from the saddles to the toe clips, while integrating the air box under the seat. Now a good dose of chrome-molybdenum steel for the frame. A tubular structure using the engine as a stiffening element, as the brand knows how to concoct them. And as you might expect, the stuff hanging on it isn’t bad. A 43 mm WP inverted fork, specially developed for this Duke but not adjustable; a rear shock absorber, also WP, which can be adjusted in preload and rebound; 300mm brake tracks with KTM branded 4-piston radial calipers at the front – a 240mm with dual-piston caliper at the rear; an oscillating arm ribbed on the outside; and the shocking argument: a dry weight of only 169 kilos. The other twin-cylinder roadster in the segment weighs 10 kg more. And to be honest, there are lighter in its category.
That begins to itch in the right hand. Because not only is there already enough to send steak … But the KTM 790 Duke was born in the digital age and from the outset places its driving assistance. And of the high level: TFT color screen; Adaptive cornering ABS, can be deactivated, and equipped with Supermoto mode to disconnect only the rear; active shifter up and down gears; four-level traction control including a special circuit; help with a standing start; slip of the MSR engine brake; anti-wheeling; rear tire slip management, adjustable from 1 to 9 levels; and four Riding Modes.
Here is a preview:
– Sport: the most direct control of the throttle, allows respectable drifts and a noticeable slip.
– Street: keep things smooth for a comfortable and controllable ride.
– Rain: early intervention of assistance and maximum grip on wet roads.
– Track: No more fun, and extensive personalization. To take full advantage of the track by reducing traction control, then fine-tune the slip of the rear wheel, smooth out the throttle, turn off the anti-wheelie and spin.
The Bluetooth link to communicate with the smartphone is optional.
The Duke range accommodates THE roadster to satisfy the vast majority of users. We can now start with the 125, confirm in 390, be marginal and appreciate the gromono in 690, go crazy with adrenaline and power in 1290 … But above all, throw ourselves into the great arena of wolves with this 790. L he KTM identity is evident in both design and technique. This bike has everything to strike a blow, moreover “uppercute” by a well targeted price.
Anxious to please everyone, the 790 Duke will be available in a special L version with A2 license. Its power is reduced to 95 ch or 70 Kw in order to be able to be limited to 47.5 ch.
