Among the Austrians, we are not afraid of anything. And especially not to disturb the biker galaxy as much as possible. KTM presented us with a crazy roadster with the 990 Super Duke… The factory shocked with its extravagant RC8 sports car … We are not going to stop there !
Today here is a new supermoto who overdosed on vitamins. The 950 Supermoto is a cousin of the 640 by design but powered by the big KTM twin. Imagine a supermot ‘with almost 100 nags in the pistons and torque pulling out half of the track. Well, it gives that.
Like the engine, the frame is from the 950 Adventure. The other elements that make up the bike already give those concerned a smile: large 48 mm inverted fork, adjustable shock absorber from anywhere mounted without connecting rods, long suspension travel (we will be able to take it to play anywhere, or almost), Brembo brake with radial fixing and pneumatic mounting of 180 mm at the rear.
To make a supermotard with the genes of a sportswoman and a street fighter, you had to dare to do it. There is no doubt that the machine will have great potential, coupled with a “total anti-depression” concept. Its use may however be limited, due to a frankly oriented concept and minimalist protection. Not serious ; we don’t take a hypermotard to travel, just to give ourselves a maximum of sensations.
Test by Oli le Belge:
“The Canada Bike”
But no, no, I’m not losing my mind, I don’t suddenly think that KTM is a Canadian brand. But I am referring more to the commercial of a very fashionable soft drink in the 80s… ..you had, of course, already understood.
The 950 Super Moto has the flavor of an SM, the tires of an SM and the color of an SM but (to me) it is definitely not an SM. Why ?
1st contact: with my recent test of the Superduke in mind and wishing to reset the counters to zero, I appeal to my brother and especially his motorcycle (a KTM 660 SMC) to immerse myself in the “real” Supermotard (ah, the professional conscience!).
And we are organizing a short run to rediscover the pleasures and drawbacks of this type of machine ….
Essay: Let’s get back to the discovery of the beast first, an important moment in a trial. I always try, during this delicious moment, to soak up the machine by detailing it at ease while letting the engine warm up.
KTM has taken the concept of the big Supermotard to a point never before reached! Judge it instead:
A 950cc twin engine of nearly 100hp, with an aggressive line, even intimidating, with a substantial saddle height (865mm), radial brakes, a cycle part and beefy moss tires (Pirelli Scorpion, specially developed for the bike and ultra resistant despite the heat), it does not run the streets !!!
The KTM racing identity is reflected in a host of details: the clutch and brake handles are pre-slit so that, in a hypothetical fall, you keep a piece to complete the round; the selector is foldable and, less nice, the dashboard is sketchy and devoid of tachometer !
Here it is, the beast is at temperature.
I get on it, I find the position quite confusing, the long saddle allows you to adopt 2 postures: one forwards and on the tank for the attack and the other more in the center of the saddle in a part softer for the ride.
The forward position is naturally taken during the first turns of the wheel, the knees are spread by the width of the radiator and the buttocks try to move away from the magnificent stainless steel pots which give off a crazy heat. If by any chance you decide to embark a passenger, he will enjoy a comfortable position with ideally placed rubber footrests, but he will have to equip himself with asbestos gloves if he does not want to have melted hands. by the pots !
Please note, however, in KTM’s favor, that during my 4 days of testing the ambient temperature was really scorching, in the range of 30-35 ° C.
The urge to charge forward is heightened by the bike’s furious tendency to wheelie. The Supermoto user will not have to budget for a big “front tire” budget !!
The gear ratios change on the fly and when, for once, we return to decent speeds of the order of 80 km / h in first, 115 in second and 150 in third, we can take advantage of the extension and the torque. low speed engine.
Referring to the title of this article, I find the ride more like a big Speed Triple style roadster than a Supermoto !!
The power and the weight force you to extend the braking distances compared to a Supermotard, the other big difference in behavior coming from the inverted 48mm fork which allows, thanks to its rigidity, to extend the knee to take a spectacular angle !!
The engine is really fully usable, the 95 horsepower is there. And, is it the pleasure of finding carbs? The revs are powerfully linear but never violent.
The engine, which is not stingy with sensations, only requires a reasonable 8 liters per 100km despite sporty driving throughout the test. The 17.5l tank allows a range of a small 180km before reserve. Either way, your thighs and knees will be cooked long before that. !!
So what ? Supermoto or not ?
Yes and no.
The KTM look is as spectacular as ever, the billhook-cut shapes, the high pots, the ultra-aggressive headlight plate make this bike an enchantment as visual as it is acoustically..
But if you want to mingle with a group of Supermotards, you will quickly find yourself cramped, the machine asking for space..
On the other hand, it will not denote in a group of roadsters, the exploitable power, the handling and the angle of grip allowing you to follow and even more ….
Basically, I love it !
