Dream of Dakar? It’s impossible not to think about it once you get on the handlebars of the KTM Adventure. Particularly in the S version (30 mm higher ground clearance and Dakar decoration) irresistibly evokes the dunes and the scent of hot sand. The most important of this evolution of the Adventure is not this pretty trekking suit but the adoption of the twin of the Superduke: the 990 cm3. Reduced to 98 ch in order to better stick to the big trail use, it allows the Katoche of the great roads to pass to the injection and to be enriched with a little more torque. New saddle, new indicators, appearance of optional ABS, little extras that will allow the Adventure to gradually approach the queen of the segment, the BMW R 1200 GS.
Trial :
Set at a good cruising speed, the Adventure does as well as the other tenors of the segment: excellent protection, much more comfortable sitting than the old piece of soft wood, raised torso, pleasant position and satisfactory autonomy – The KTM has great road values.
And after that, there is always the end of the road … or rather, the change of scenery. To discover magical places, you often have to walk the beaten track or side roads. This is where the big modern trails form 2 teams. The Varadero, Caponord, V-Strom, 1200 GS (to name a few) express themselves in unison: “Well, we are going to continue on the asphalt because … That is to say .. . Here it is, what … “. It’s clear, they are super strong (sometimes more) like the KTM on big ribbons; but as soon as it becomes pebbles and adventure, only the Austrian sets out to conquer the slopes. OK, it’s green. We put ourselves in the TT position, we raise our heads (and everything else too) and we will frolic like on the GR 20. Even if the Adventure cannot have the qualities of lightness of a 450, it does justice to its appellation trail and behaves very well on roads without asphalt. The big V2, flexible and progressive, makes it possible to avoid putting on a tome by re-accelerating on this terrain with a tricky tendency. If you really insist on playing, don’t forget that there are more than 200 kgs to catch up if it ever goes wrong….
2 quintals, that’s relative. When stopped, it looks like she’s doing more; by rolling, with its thin tires, the arrangement of its center of gravity and the behavior of its engine, the motorcycle seems to do less. The agility manifests itself quickly and the Austrian twin knows how to be appreciated. At mid-speed, the 990 offers more than the old 950, while its values on paper are almost the same. In use, this V2 is a real treat, flexible, powerful, easy, available and not vibrating.
What’s wrong with the 990? Maybe a little high price, no fuel gauge, little space under the saddle and a saddle height that could put off some (especially in S version: 89.5 cm). Question versatility, this will surely be the only big trail that will allow you to ride at good speed on the long Corsican national road of Solenzara then to immerse yourself in the desert of Agriates.
