Fan stitch BMW F 800 S with MAB turbo in an individual test

Zero to 200 in eleven seconds

An MAB turbocharger puts a lot of pressure on Tobias Fanenstich’s BMW F 800 S. Modifications to the chassis, optics and ergonomics perfectly garnish the extra power.

Appointment with Tobias Fanenstich in Herten, once the city with the largest coal mining in Europe. Tobias shows his personal custom bike, a Victory Hammer S: He has rebuilt the totally disassembled long-term test copy from MOTORRAD over 50,000 kilometers, see issue 21/2014. But the 32-year-old also has “something else nice” in the garage. And so the workshop foreman from the Vogelsang motorcycle center in Recklinghausen presents one of just three Fanenstich BMWs F. 800 S Turbo in Germany. In 2006 it was one of the very first F 800 S..

After 3000 turns there is no stopping it

The black lacquered aluminum bridge frame goes well with the special white lacquer and blue rims. The conversion to Superbike handlebars from AC Schnitzer, pillion seat cover and the sporty black-tinted windshield look solid and harmonious. Plenty of goodies are distributed over the Fanenstich BMW F 800 S: milled hand levers, crash pads on the axles, Wilbers shock absorber with rotary knob. “What you can’t see,” says Tobias, “is the aluminum airbox under the tall dummy fuel tank: plastic wouldn’t be able to withstand the excess pressure.” He smiles. "Keys?" Hmm, actually no time. "Okay, once around the block." The parallel twin, which is only 8.8 instead of the previous twelve, starts spontaneously. He doesn’t prottt too aggressively, sounds robust and dull. Almost like a tuned boxer, thanks to the even firing order. Things are tame in the lower corridors in the city. The Turbo doesn’t eat small children right away. But be careful: at 2800 tours you can feel the loader kick in, after 3000 there is no stopping. From now on the torque is always between 105 and 115 Newton meters. The power peaks in 133 hp. Shower up!

Wow, that pulls the (tooth) belt on the exit sign! Zero to 200 in eleven seconds! Plus a pull-through from 60 to 140 km / h in 6.5 seconds! The thrust is simply an experience, addicting. The sixth gear needs 3000 as the minimum speed, should be engaged from 80 at the earliest. There are sometimes violent dropouts. Nevertheless, Tobias ’motto is correct:“ Good drivability. ”The turbo of the Fanenstich-BMW F 800 S can be easily driven by the pull on the cable. Gentle when it should be, brutally whenever it has to be.

Every time the throttle is released or upshifts, it does "Pfffttt", almost like a steam locomotive: The release valve releases pressure, keeping the maximum boost pressure at a tame 0.6 bar. Power wheelies without using the clutch? Clear. Just because. After a rough landing, Tobias once hit the front wheel on the intercooler mounted in front of the water cooler. Well, the structurally simple, non-adjustable standard fork is weak in damping and suspension. Cartridge inserts from HH Race-Tech with modified springs brought much more reserves. Now the fork of the Fanenstich BMW F 800 S is completely adjustable. Their adjustment range is large; small turns in compression and rebound make noticeable differences.

Surprisingly good: the windbreak

Gabel and Wilbers strut carefully scan the asphalt relief and project information about it transparently onto the brain. Just quickly out on the A 43 into the Munsterland. The tuning turbo moves steadily, even at top speed. And that despite the fairly upright sitting position behind the superbike handlebars. Rough transverse joints leave the BMW completely cold with the large pitch factor. Your steering damper does a great job. At 231 km / h (speedometer display 245) the limiter kicks in. Surprisingly good: the windbreak. Quickly try again fluid curve combinations. With the wide, perfectly at hand aluminum handlebar, the Fanenstich BMW F 800 S can be directed to the point. Everything is very easy.

She drives briskly, this fan stitch BMW F 800 S, almost daring. This 800 series fulfills the BMW motto of driving pleasure. It rightly bears the “S” in its name. However, other tires than Michelin Pilot Road 2 could even top their accuracy. Oops, not even noticed – 200 kilometers have already been torn down. The MAB exhaust rumbled one last time when the accelerator was released. The rather fat twin has sooted the license plate slightly. Well, where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

Welding specialist (aluminum, steel, titanium) Michael Klein from MAB Power has not stopped this turbo for years. However, there are now major advances in hardware and software: “We have learned something new: an F 800 with one bar boost pressure and additional injection is even good for 145 hp at the rear wheel!” Then you would have to translate longer because of the acute risk of rollover. Never mind, we had so much fun with the Fanenstich BMW F 800 S around Herten.
