For backpackers, the first necessary tool is a trail ready for anything. Whether it is able to cross ruts or presentable in front of a beautiful farmhouse, the machine is chosen from a plethora of offers. There are some from all manufacturers, with big displacement, big skills, and big prices..
And there is Mash, who decided to keep it simple. An engine of medium displacement, no assistance, no frills, no frills, and a price almost divided by three compared to the stars of the segment. The Mash 400 Adventure R means seeing the horizon differently.
Brand new to the French manufacturer and to the motorcycling landscape, this 400 Adventure is not completely new. Indeed, it is closely derived from the Shineray 400 Kougar. However, do not think that it is a copy and paste as Suzuki and Kawa could have done with the 1000 V-Strom and KLV. SIMA imposes more robust specifications than the Chinese manufacturer, in order to adapt the trail as it should. Improved quality and more reliability to satisfy the more demanding European consumer. And the result can only enchant budding adventurers. They do not necessarily want to slam a year of minimum wage in an R 1200 GS; especially if it is to discover trekking without necessarily so indulging for 5000 terminals. The Mash 400 Adventure R is initiation, peaceful pebbles and lightness.
The word is not weak. With 151 kilos dry, the Sino-French trail is a featherweight. Which represents a lot of advantages: easier to take than a trail-GT, less hassle to overcome in case of wallowing, and less effort for the single cylinder.
The Mash Adventure recovers the 397cc from the Five Hundred. A very simple mechanism, derived from an antique Honda engine. Air cooling, simple ACT, measured performance, with all the same an injection as a bonus of modernism. It is here slightly retouched to bring out 2 more horses, or 29 donkeys to ensure the work between the streets and the rocks. With that, no need to look for the galloping prowess of a Ducati Multistrada. The latter makes short work of the 200 km / h mark; the Mash will be content to flirt with the motorway limits. Grand tourism is not for her. Discovering all the forgotten corners of the region is more his thing.
The watchword remains simplicity. For the diamond-type steel frame, for the sober but successful design, for the pretensions and for driving with a frame without fuss. It is completed with a classic 43mm fork (not bad for a 400) and a Fast Ace shock absorber, spoke rims and a disc brake per wheel..
Ride-by-Wire, injection maps, anti-wheeling, anti-skating, anti-thing, trick control, monitoring of the gadget, you have to forget. But the absence of all of that candy on premium motorcycles doesn’t mean the Mash 400 Adventure is poor like Job. As standard, it lets you hit the trails right out of the dealership. From the start you have a large windshield, hand guards, an engine guard (in plastoc), enduro footrests, bellows to protect the fork tubes and a set of aluminum Touratech-type 35-liter cases. each. They seem ready to face anything. But they are not hinged, which can be a pain in the long run. The rims of 21 and 18 display the dimensions for the off-road, while the mixed tires will allow some escapades..
Let us not forget to clarify a few points. The fork is adjustable in rebound and compression; the shock absorber benefits from the same settings with the additional preload. Like any typical all-road / terrain machine, the saddle height is appreciated perched: 880 mm for the Mash. Regret, ABS is missing.
Where the Mash Adventure hits hard is that it will remind many of the scent of simple and playful machines, which once could go anywhere, for the price of a finger. When all we needed was a stump of bread and an endless thirst for journeys and memories. In front of a puddle of boiling water between the trees, who will be the bravest? The 150 horsepower maxi-trail at 20,000 balls or a little shrew who doesn’t give a damn about having a twisted retro and shoulders full of slush ?!?
