This new 650 brings forgotten moments up to date. Not so much the bike but its engine. This block, the largest of Mash, brings to life slices of a past where we lived great moments with a single cylinder in the carton. That time when the big mono was a star. Today, who still defends this motorization? KTM with its 690 present in its SMC R, Enduro R and Duke … Husqvarna via Supermoto, Svartpilen and Vitpilen … Apart from that, you have to look in very confidential productions. Or….
Go through the door of a Mash dealership. After having firmly established itself in the 125 sector and then introduced the retro 400 with endearing machines (Five Hundred, TT40, etc.), the stronghold of Beaune is increasing in capacity to offer something more crisp. Under a clear dash of racing on land, the 6.5 Dirt plays the character card while showing the new engine of the productions badged by the SIMA.
The design comes straight from the small 50, 125 and 250 Dirt Track. The terrain therefore appears familiar, with this little extra showing a more obvious strength. With a face under the yoke of a number plate where a lenticular lighthouse is excavated, the machine confirms an offbeat, impatient expression, to grumble the other participants.
Following a bad awakening? No, because of a higher wattage rate than the rest of the family. Mash production peaked at 27.6 horsepower with the 400. Here, we go to 40 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. The torque promises to be modest compared to the displacement, with 4.6 mkg at 4,500 rpm. All in all makes sense when it comes to adapting mechanics from the past with current standards. Besides, who is this block? Where is he from ? Great mono of the new times? *
The Shineray group, which supplies SIMA a lot, manufactures this engine, which is derived from Honda’s 600 XR. With the license in hand, the Chinese industrialist did not need to design it but only to adapt it. He took the opportunity to increase the displacement from 591 cm3 to 643.7 cm3 thanks to a significant increase in the bore (91 mm -> 100 mm) and minimal stroke (80 mm – 82 mm). As for other Mash, the injection comes from Delphi. The box has 6 reports. For cooling, we stay in the old school with fins and a small oil cooler. The cylinder head houses a single ACT but 4 valves. With this 40-year-old technology, do not expect the dry and powerful punch of an EXC but the pronounced effort of an old unguligrade on the return. Its 40 nags allow it to remain accessible to the A2 license, not making it a thunderbolt but enough to respond more seriously than the 400 when the handle is requested..
Just like the name suggests, the Mash 6.5 wants to believe in Dirt Track. Its equipment allows it, with its spoked rims shod with studded tires, its inverted 41 mm fork, its large handlebars and its dynamic look. See how the back is retro-sporty and how certain details maintain the culture of American-style oval riding: the very “Harley XR” black and orange color, the race number on the face and side panels , the Rican flag … and some welcome styling effects such as the Monza-style fuel cap, the offset license plate holder or the minimalist treatment of the front fender.
On an oval, braking is very relative. The Dirt Track 650 is more careful with its 320mm brake disc pinched by a 4-piston caliper. The ABS is present but can be disconnected for those who want to have fun with a certain dose of technique. A single disc? No, there is another at the rear, 240mm. This will be more than sufficient in view of the performance of the machine and its contained weight of 163 kilos..
Cute and retro, more equipped in displacement and power, this Dirt 6.5 takes Mash to a higher dimension. Always aggressive in its prices, the manufacturer offers this machine at a minimum price, quite simply the cheapest of the 600 on the market..
* The elders will have recognized a passage from a Grendizer song.
