Endurance test Cagiva Navigator

Orientation level

Travel enduro or fun bike, which course is the Cagiva Navigator taking? 50,000 kilometers in the MOTORRAD fleet bring clarity.

Exhaust slippers ?? This is the first comment in the logbook, which from June 22, 2000 records the two-year relationship between the Cagiva Navigator and the MOTORRAD editorial team. Well, sometimes it is better if you speak frankly right at the beginning of a relationship. Then everyone finally knows where he is. Especially since "slap" sounds a bit tender, like the little quirk of a sometimes moody partner. But just a week later there was the first tangible row, and that was the end of funny: the Italian diva had to be accused of "bastard" and "zero feeling". Why does the otherwise friendly colleague Monika Schulz of all people use such drastic formulations? Unsteady driving behavior, doughy steering, uncultivated engine running in the partial load range are serious reproaches, and other drivers make similar accusations.
However, the relationship should not fail due to goodwill, so therapeutic measures to overcome the crisis are initiated at an early stage. The first step: new shoes. After 4,000 kilometers, the standard Metzeler ME Z4s have to give way to a pair of Bridgestone BT 020s. Although this brings a clearly noticeable improvement, the criticism of the wobbly driving behavior does not finally silence. The fact that test machines of the same type always run more precisely is an occasion for intensive research into the causes. The steering head bearings are sometimes loosened, then tightened again because of noticeable play? all without any major impact. "Something is wrong with the track," typed chassis guru Werner "Mini" Koch. 15 millimeters of offset between the front and rear wheels is the result of an in-depth examination, quite a lot. At a mileage of 22,000, Speer dealt with the chassis as part of an inspection. The rear wheel is re-centered and the track offset is compensated. Finally, the Navigator even gets precision steering head bearings from Emil Schwarz. All expensive measures, but neither the tilting steering behavior when driving slowly nor the tendency to swing at speeds of 160 km / h or more disappear completely.
The therapy sessions show more success with the mysterious exhaust slapping and the uneven idling. Because the cause is found late, but not too late: Many workshops were initially not informed that the secondary air system had to be disconnected in order to adjust the idle mixture. After the engine was apparently correctly adjusted for the first time at km 22,000, it immediately behaves considerably more cultivated. The civil manners surprise many drivers. "Suddenly runs well", "without any problems", "absolutely flawlessly today", are the entries.
Two factions emerge over time: Contemporaries with a tourist inclination are never entirely satisfied despite all the progress made in dealing with the gruff Italian. You complain about the uncomfortable sitting position, the lack of wind protection. In addition, there are detailed solutions that are not very practical, such as the split tank, which has to be refueled using two lockable lids. In addition, annoying little things, such as missing luggage hooks, the poor oil check, the fiddly side stand, the clattering paneling, the seat soaked with water and so on.
The sporty fun bike riders rarely deal with such trivialities. The bend-wetters are particularly enthusiastic about the aggressive, easy-revving engine. "Despite the moderate processing, an ingenious part," attested even one of the stokers and, in the exuberance of emotions, tore 700 kilometers down in around five hours. "Much more fun than with the Varadero," is how graphic designer Stefan Weber sums up his brief but obviously intimate liaison with the fiery Italian.
Then negative comments predominate in the logbook. Now the critics are shooting themselves at the braking system, which initially worked to the satisfaction. The fact that the rear pads are worn after 10,000 kilometers is only marginally noted. In contrast to annoying squeaking noises, which are increasingly criticized. My colleague Lindner doesn’t hesitate for long, greases the back of the pad with copper paste, treats the joint of the lever with some grease on the occasion and thus – temporarily – ensures peace. He is more concerned about the rear brake, which fails completely due to overheating after a pass trip with two people and luggage. After venting, everything is okay again. Perhaps this was the reason why the third set of rear pads is due after 18,000 kilometers, while the first front pads survive 22,000 kilometers. It is noticeable that the workshops consistently use accessory coverings, for example from Lucas or EBC, without asking the customer. At 25 euros, they cost only a third of the Cagiva parts, but are not original and, strictly speaking, even lead to the expiry of warranty claims.
Since the squeaking noises when braking are gradually becoming a constant, little-loved companion, the changing intervals of the pads are getting shorter and the front wheel no longer runs freely, the dealer Limbacher finally gets the pliers going again with new sealing sets. Ultimately, the discs also fell victim to the high level of pad consumption: At the end of the endurance test, the wear limit was reached and both front discs were ready to be replaced.
After all, the braking problems never led to the end of a business trip. In contrast to the rear wheel bearings, which ACTION TEAM employee Daniel Lengwenus stranded at kilometer 33,000 in Kerpen. The front counterparts were not granted a long life either, after 38,000 kilometers they were replaced as a precaution. And to complete the camp malaise: 4000 kilometers later, the bearings of the sprocket carrier were finally on, so that the Navigator now rolls along completely new bearings. Unfortunately, the workshops failed to take care of the swing arm bearings as well. Then it would not have come to the point that these would completely dissolve towards the end of the endurance test on the chain side due to corrosion. And maybe the chain would not have cut a deep groove in the swing arm in the meantime because of a worn protective cover on the underside.
Another case for the workshop is the clutch, tester Karsten Schwers Rupfen complains after just 13,000 kilometers. The phenomenon is reminiscent of the Suzuki TL 1000, from which the Navigator motor originates: the driver of the servo unit was susceptible to wear, which led to poor controllability. But at least the clutch lasts up to 43,000 kilometers, only then does the assumption become a certainty. The pads and the reconditioned servomechanism are exchanged on guarantee. The clutch basket and hub, on the other hand, survived the constant stress surprisingly well. Like most parts of the Suzuki engine, that is shown by the inventory at the end of the 50,000-kilometer test. There is little cause for concern here. The crankshaft drive and pistons are in top form. The exhaust valves, on the other hand, show clear traces of fire and must be replaced, as well as a gearshift that has been heavily tarnished on both sides.
TDespite all criticism of the capricious Italian, the logbook closes in a conciliatory manner. Daniel Lengwenus, of all people, who was the only one who got stuck with the Navigator, attests to its »brilliant super-moto handling« in the end..

Cagiva takes a position

…. In the beginning, some dealers found it difficult to set the idle mixture correctly, in particular the necessary disconnection of the secondary air system was often forgotten. All dealers have been informed accordingly since mid-2001. With the right attitude, the symptoms described should no longer occur. …. to the popping of the exhaust in overrun mode This is also largely a consequence of the incorrect setting of the injection system. It is also important that the valve clearance is set correctly. …. about the traces of fire on the exhaust valves We consider it normal and absolutely harmless that there are traces of fire on the valves and seats after 50,000 kilometers. The slightly stronger marks on a single valve could be due to insufficient valve clearance ….. wear on the piston ringsCertainly absolutely harmless, especially since no increased oil consumption could be determined. The rings should be good for another 50,000 kilometers without any problems. Since the engine is now dismantled, it is still advisable to replace it with a new one ….. on clutch problems (hooks, tugs) We are aware of the problem. The correct setting of the release mechanism is very important, in some cases the basic setting was even wrong. After the run-in period of around 1000 kilometers, a check should definitely be carried out, our dealers have been trained accordingly. …. to the signs of wear on the shift fork The reason cannot be identified, probably an operating error. …. on the high level of brake pad wear No customer has encountered such a case so far. It is important that original pads are always used during the inspections. We will take the fact that this was not taken into account in the test machine as an opportunity to expressly point this out to our dealers once again ….. to the defective wheel bearings front and rear Here, too, there were no anomalies among the customers, so we list these defects frequently Cleaning with the steam jet back …. to the side stand switch An individual case ….. to the wobbly driving behavior and tendency to pendulum We have no complaints from customers about this. We would like to point out that the correct setting of the steering head bearing and the correct air pressure must be ensured.

Reader Experience – Cagiva Navigator

Except for a few parts that are susceptible to corrosion, I have not found any major defects. At 16,000 kilometers, the manifold that was cracked in the area of the welded nut was replaced by our dealer under guarantee. With the Navigator, I have acquired a sporty, curve-hungry fun bike with travel enduro qualities. Luggage is no problem thanks to the in-house case system. After the original tires (Metzeler) I have now put on the Pirelli MTR 04, but the liability reserves are not great in extreme lean angles. Klaus Wolfgang Pilz, Nettetal I have driven 16,000 kilometers with my navigation system and I am quite satisfied. The following problems have arisen so far: fork seals were leaking (guarantee), there are exhaust pops in push mode, which my Suzuki dealer was able to significantly alleviate through meticulous adjustment of the throttle valves. I cannot confirm spare parts problems. The average consumption is six liters. I was dissatisfied with the standard Metzeler Z4, the BT 020 goes much better with the Navigator. The front tire lasts around 10,000 kilometers, the rear around 8,000. In my opinion, the look and performance are great and the sound when accelerating out of corners is really great. The seating position and the suspension are perfect, so you can forgive the annoying chain tensioner and the double tank. I swapped the seat cover for a less slippery and waterproof one. Axel Hajek, Aystetten I have been driving the GPS for 22,000 kilometers so far. A spoiler screen from Touratech, heated grips, clock, side luggage rack with Darr aluminum cases were retrofitted. Tea engine guard was reinforced with Hobbyplast, as slight cracks were already visible. The bench was covered with a rainproof cover. Due to the low seat height, the navigation system is also suitable for smaller drivers. With a moderate driving style, the consumption is 6 liters / 100km. The engine that often boils in summer, the loosening chain tensioners and the quickly leaking tank including the smell of petrol are criticisms. I would buy the navigation system again at any time. Mario Ihle, Burgstadt The thing is fun, the engine impresses with a spontaneous pull, only under 3500 rpm there was such a jerk, during the 12,000 kilometer inspection the valves and electronics were then set, and the jerking was gone, so easy.
