Monument to Fabrizio Meoni
Dakar winner as a bronze statue
Fabrizio Meoni is unforgettable among his compatriots: a monument to him was recently unveiled in his home town of Castiglion Fiorentino near Arezzo, Tuscany.

The exceptional Italian athlete Fabrizio Meoni won the Dakar Rally in 2001 and 2002. In Castiglion Fiorentino there is now an impressive bronze statue that has him on his KTM LC8 shows the driveway to a dune.
Fabrizio Meoni had a fatal accident in Mauritania in 2005 during the Dakar Rally, after which the then 47-year-old wanted to retire from racing. The Tuscan sculptor Lucio Minigrilli created the bronze statue within two years. It was commissioned by the municipality, the local motorcycle club and the Meoni Foundation (www.fondazionefabriziomeoni.it), which looks after children in Africa and has already set up three schools in Senegal on behalf of the pilot.
Motorsport fans from all over Italy came to unveil the statue, as did Meoni’s two children and his widow.
