The Calif! Affectionate nickname for a motorcycle that has passed the stage of existence to become an icon. She is one of those legends to which we forgive all faults. Now it’s time to face the competition with a presence and musculature never before seen for this Italian cruiser.. By becoming 1400, the California wipes out the past and keeps almost only the name.
She was sweating vintage, here she is premium. Oh, rest assured, it still conveys the idea of tourism, the riviera, the Los Angeles police, custom to stroll around Lake Como. It has acquired confidence, presence, technology; perhaps too much for some. When one looks at the other, a time gap separates them; as if 20 years had instantly blown old Calif. And yet, the 1400 did not want to absolve itself of this eloquent past. The effects have passed through the ages: the black and white saddle, the chrome passenger arch, the cow horn handlebars, the streaks of paint on the tank, the additional small headlights, the cardan transmission, and the transverse twin. Go back a little, turn around it, stop on its 3/4 rear and this double row of very designer LED lights, judge the finish, let the quality flatter you, look up … Stop! Drop the criticism and listen to your eyes: it is beautiful.
Whether in 850, 1100 or 1400, the California is above all a Guzzi. And a Guzzi is an engine, the famous twin whose cylinders overflow on the sides. An identity all by itself this mechanism. In this latest version, it features a displacement of a new caliber, the biggest in Mandello’s history. With 1380 cm3, the block gains strength and torque. Forget the 73 horsepower of the 1100 – up to 96 nags perched at 6500 rpm. The couple makes a masterful leap: from one Calif to another, the force goes from 9.5 to 12.3 mkg. Above all, its maximum is available twice as soon as possible, at 2,750 rpm.
This block can really unleash controversy, passion and thrill, skilfully playing on modern technique and historical solutions. It is also not completely unknown: it is derived from the 1200, whose piston stroke is preserved. But the bore goes to 104 mm. The styling effect of the cylinders perforating the tank and the sculpted cylinder head covers are striking. In the belly, that contrast. A single ACT per cylinder and a tumbled distribution, but 4 valves on each side, a Magnetti Marelli injection, a ride by wire accelerator, and a surprising level of electronics for a custom. The 1400 California has 3-level adjustable traction control, cruise control and 3 injection maps (Veloce, Turismo and Pioggia – Sport, Road and Rain). The Veloce mode gives the Calif a sporty character, the Turismo is aptly named, and the Pioggia reduces the mill potato by 25% while smoothing the arrival of the couple. Far from being a gadget, this system truly changes the face of the 1400 and can save the bike’s ass on wet terrain. Speaking of the fleet, it was long believed that this new engine would be provided with water cooling. It is not! The category remains pegged to certain principles, and the heat is here evacuated by air and oil.
Big twin, reinforced on-board electronics, generous line, the machine could stop there. But Guzzi has recreated everything for his majestic machine. Starting with a new frame, double steel cradle type. Its particularity is the diffusion of vibrations within it. According to the brand, the flexible mounting of the twin cylinder allows its pulsations to propagate at idle and then annihilate them once the accelerator is mobilized..
Mandello has revised the gearbox, now with 6 speeds, cardan transmission, and brakes. Upon learning that the coupled braking has disappeared, the “Californians” will cough a little more. Perhaps they will be consoled by the standard ABS, the radial calipers with 4 pistons, and the new pretensions of the part-cycle. Everything widens: 46 mm in diameter from now on for the fork, and large gommards at the front as at the rear. The front will split the road with 130mm of rubber while the rear axle will sit firmly on 200mm of rolling. With its 110 and 140 rises, the old 1100 suddenly seems to have mob tires..
And the lighthouse? Watch this intriguing lens. Complex shapes, a lenticular element, LEDs … It would almost monopolize the attention. Under the large windshield, another element was the subject of great creativity: the dashboard. A single dial, round, surrounded by chrome, placed in front of the triple tree, with a central digital window and multiple information. Simple and complete at the same time, elegant, modern, superb !
A real invitation to the pleasure of riding, the new Moto-Guzzi 1400 California carries on its hips a pair of (very beautiful) suitcases with a capacity of 35 liters each; unfortunately, they cannot contain a helmet. The machine stands out for its design, its engine and its build. 337 kilos, 1685mm of wheelbase, almost 2.50m long, that sits you up on a motorcycle. Equipped with advanced electronics, a generous twin and a serious chassis, the Italian cruiser becomes a most serious competitor against American and related productions. The Harley Road King, Victory Cross Roads and Kawa 1700 Tourer have found who to talk to.
The 1400 California is also available in a Custom version, more stripped down, stripped of its tourer equipment, and much more “bad”…
