Moto-Guzzi 850 V9 Roamer 2018

A motorcycle that evolves every year?!? It’s exceptional, and that’s what happens to the V9. The Roamer has decided to take a turn a little more road, while the brother Bobber takes a more ….. let’s say ‘sporty’ route.
How to assert your profile ? The V9 is equipped with a small windshield and a pair of more comfortable shock absorbers. That’s all, and that’s enough. Because like any Guzzi, the details have another importance on this kind of machines.

And last year, she had what like changes? Minor, but which prove that Guzzi is attentive to comments, and reactive. The most important is the repositioning of the footrests. Shifted 100mm backwards and 35mm higher, they will prevent the knees from flirting too much with the twin cylinder heads. Concerned about comfort, the V9 has a new saddle, thicker and more comfortable. Guzzi specifies that these improvements can be adopted by previous V9s. Just take out the checkbook, buy the parts and do some tinkering. These evos do not change the provisions of the V9 Roamer but will make it more pleasant to live. Essential for a motorcycle that requires a minimum of passion and philosophy.

Cultivate our identity, do what we know how to do … or rather do what is attached to our image. This is how certain brands have to run ever faster in the face of progress, and some draw on an aura of classic to establish their presence. This is the case with Guzzi, whose retro side has never been so valued. One does not expect from the Italian manufacturer a tracker or a bleeding streetfighter; the owner group Piaggio is letting Aprilia get excited about it. For Mandello, the roadster has a taste of custom, and to enrich the range, this V9 Roamer will be in good taste for amateurs.

Guzzistes discover the pulsations of transverse V2 with V7. Except that his little block will look weak after a while. The V9 will be able to fill this gap, with a new block of 853 cm3.
No question of taking and inflating the twin of the V7. This one can no longer evolve towards more displacement. So the manufacturer brings a new mill, halfway between the V7 and the Bellagio.
No liquid cooling, no unsightly radiator, but still technology, especially in order to make a compact engine. A single injection body with a Y-shaped duct, work on the clutch and the gearbox, a marked depollution (injection of fresh air into the exhaust ducts, lambda probe and catalyst), and these specificities of a other time. The Guzzi engine is always equipped with 2 valves per cylinder and a tumbled distribution.
New crankshaft, revised gearbox, new transmission, overhauled injection, and significantly more power compared to the V7. The V9 unit outputs 55 horsepower at 6250 rpm, or 7 horsepower better than the 744 cm3. With 3 Nm more, the torque evolves less dramatically, reaching its maximum of 6.4 mkg at just 3000 rpm. Numbers for a smooth ride, rocked by the charm of the mechanics. Do not try to compare or relativize in relation to an engine of a more sporting philosophy. Some (most) will always wonder why Guzzi leaves half the power at the equivalent displacement of a Japanese … The tempo, the character, the patina, the hammering of the twin cylinder heads on the knees are quite different. A temperament to be appreciated beyond the performances, with a deep and personal vigor. A trembling hand that takes you on vacation to the shores of lakes and time.

Moto-Guzzi 850 V9 Roamer 2018

The Roamer is above all a personality. A more mature, more classic, more grounded motorcycle than the V7. The reservoir alone appeals to the distilled charm. Guzzi intends to raise the level of finish, and offer a machine offering enough cachet to counter the strong influence (and success) of BMW, master of neo-retro, and Triumph, lord of Classic. This V9 is savored with the technique of yesteryear, consisting of a classic double-cradle steel frame. New in the range, it is announced more rigid than that of the V7 II. No surprise for the entire chassis, with a 40mm fork, a set of two shock absorbers and a single front disc for braking. The 320 mm wafer, with a 4-piston caliper and ABS will be sufficient for the performance of the Roamer. The rear brake, entrusted to a 260 mm disc, will be of a certain comfort to help slow down with flexibility..
Honor to metal, to an engine steeped in time, to a simple and sufficient chassis. But Guzzi does not hesitate to visit the Piaggio garage, where technology is teeming; cousin Aprilia loves the Superbike and develops a lot of electronics there. So, surprisingly enough for a motorcycle of this opus, we find on board the V9 a traction control adjustable in two positions, and disconnectable. Appreciable, a USB socket will allow you to connect GPS, accessories or smartphone. Moreover, the Roamer can be optionally equipped with the MG-MP multimedia platform. The app allows you to display a wealth of information, completing the unique on-board counter. A chrome circle welcoming a pearly tachometric card, completed with a digital window. In the end, the V9 is much richer in modernity than it looks.

A large handlebar, a thick and welcoming saddle, an obvious good upbringing and a suavely Italian chic, the V9 Roamer is clearly an invitation to beautiful walks. The kind of bike we choose to tell us a story. Opposite, the competition is fierce. Ducati Scrambler, Triumph Street Twin, Harley-Davidson 72 and sisters make serious, if not better, arguments. But a Guzzi does not follow the same logic as the market.
