If it weren’t for the cheapest and simplest series, the Trident 750/900, in the salesrooms in 1991. A good ten kilograms lighter than the uniform four-cylinder, with unmistakably hoarse hissing, robust engine running and narrow silhouette, the new triple was most likely to convince. For example MOTORRAD editor Fred Siemer, who after the first test (MOTORRAD 21/1991) declared the 900 cc three-cylinder to be his “favorite big ship”.

With all the criticisms of the brakes and chassis of the first series, it was the engine concept that Triumph was supposed to use to outsmart the Japanese. Not only due to tradition, but primarily due to failure, the four-cylinder slowly but surely disappeared from the Triumph catalog and were replaced by new, successful triple series.

Today, a good 20 years after the storming of the Japanese fortress, the engine concept of the old Trident 900 has finally established itself and made Triumph one of the most successful European motorcycle brands. And not only that. Even Yamaha, also with a triple on the market in the 80s with the XS 750, has launched a completely new three-cylinder series for 2014. Which will not diminish the success of the English Triples in the future either. On the contrary, the Triple is in the limelight more than ever before.

Market situation: Of the 563 Trident 900s that were sold in Germany between 1991 and 1998, most are in solid hands with true triple enthusiasts. The market for used Tridents is not well stocked, but the models on offer are mostly original machines that have not been tinkered with, some of which are well below 50,000 kilometers. The prices range from less than 1000 euros for heavy corrosion construction sites to very well-maintained enthusiast vehicles around 3000 to 3500 euros.
