MZ 1000 ST (Test Compact)
On the sporty tour
With complete equipment, powerful two-cylinder and an affordable price, the 1000 ST ?? the abbreviation stands for SuperTraveller ?? Win sporty touring riders for MZ. The chassis and cladding of the third model with the 999 cm3 in-line twin are based on the 1000 S.. Just carefully adapted to more touristy purposes.
Footrests three centimeters lower and further forward ensure relaxed knee angles. The higher and wider tubular handlebar made of steel is also new. It sits dampened on a modified fork bridge and is un at the ends-
usually cranked down. His
The paintwork got a bit rough.
The disc shields the fuselage perfectly; it is compared to the S by 30 milli-
meters higher and provided with a spoiler edge. Up to a top speed of almost 240 things, the helmet is pleasantly turbulence-free
and calm in laminar flow. Clear
The pillion sits better than on the sportier S model, thanks to an upholstered seat cushion. However, its pegs are still too high.
The torque-optimized 1000 engine has different camshafts and others-
re map of the ignition / injection electronics than in the S. Its maximum torque output pink by three to 98 Newton meters, while the peak output fell from 117 to 113 hp. With this configuration, the twin acts more smoothly, it can be without it even at lower speeds
Jerks on the gas are taken. It also runs more smoothly mechanically,
but not quite as fiery as the engine of the 1000 S, which reliably passed its long-distance test at MOTORRAD ?? see edition 15/2005.
In all 2005 versions of the 1000 series, clutch pressure springs with modified characteristics reduce the manual force required by around 20 percent. Says MZ, and the tendon sheaths agree with them. The effort required to turn in is low, and the ST, thanks to its wide handlebars, is even more maneuverable around corners than its sister S. Both have an excellent, fully adjustable chassis. This is not a given among the big sports tourers, of which the ST for 10290 euros is by far the cheapest offer in its class. MZ attacks!
Ultimately, the only thing left open is the desire for better light, more payload and a main stand. For only 500 euros extra, the luggage system is also available on the reinforced rear frame. It includes two 40-liter suitcases from Krauser including a carrier system and a steering damper. That keeps the handlebar flapping, due to the extra weight at the rear, success-
rich in control. However, the barely adjustable steering damper lets the ST stagger noticeably up to 50 km / h, even in
tightest corners. Feels like tire pressure is too low.
Not quite as precise as the S, the ST arrows around the corner. But still fast and agile enough to scratch the deeper notches. Even with loaded suitcases, the Super Traveler runs perfectly straight on the track. But the high air resistance of the rear 1.05 meter wide with luggage system noticeably slows down the propulsion beyond the 200. The bottom line is that M.Z 1000 ST not only cheap? also in the maintenance ??, but sensual. Just right for the sporty tour. tsr
