Lorenzo and Rossi dominate MotoGP test day in Brno
The holidays are well over for the MotoGP riders who, after racing two weekends in a row, were treated to a Monday of practice! Champion Lorenzo set the best time ahead of his teammate Rossi and the leader of provisional Marquez.
Behind the Top 3 of MotoGP 2016
Dani Pedrosa, on the other hand, is clearly not in the pace of the leaders: the n ° 26 is still looking for its marks on the Honda prototype: "in fact, we tried to refocus and come up with new ideas to regain confidence"essential for MotoGP tightrope walkers, explains n ° 26…
Twelfth in the GP on Sunday, – far – fourth in the provisional (109 points) and 7th in this test (a second and a half behind Lorenzo), "Pedro" tried the new version of the swingarm but still has to "analyze everything in order to progress thanks to what we have understood". Understood ?!
Second Honda rider yesterday (125 thousandths of a second behind Marquez) but, with Tito Rabat, Cal Crutchlow was the first to take to the track during this test day: his first victory and his looming national GP boosted him !
"We had to work quite late until the closure of the track, because the driving conditions were not the most optimal in the morning.", underlines the openly disappointed to have missed his flight home (!)," but thanks to the team we were able to carry out the program".
"We are relatively satisfied with the lap times we were able to achieve", estimates the succession of Barry Sheene, tenth of the provisional classification (66 points)."We tried two different types of rubber at the front for Michelin and some small new elements for Honda."… who will soon be able to consider the Briton as his second best driver ?!
A quarter of a second slower than Crutchlow, Maverick Viñales was the only Suzuki rider on the track on Monday: it was agreed after the race that his teammate Aleix Espargaro could reach his home on Sunday evening to heal his hand .
"It was hard to stay for this test after two races in a row", admits Rossi’s future Yamaha teammate,"but it was worth it. Too bad the conditions (runway, editor’s note) did not allow us to work a little more and try more things, but in the end the work done will be useful".
The opinion of his team manager, Davide Brivio, is equally divided: "we haven’t made much progress here from a technical point of view", admits the Italian boss,"but we have refined important points"… which will make it possible to win the Top 3 ?
Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro didn’t have new parts to test – nor a lot of tires to run, according to the Spaniard! -, however, the Yamaha Tech3 team duo believe they have made progress on various points…
For the n ° 38 – which will roll this weekend in -, the entries in the curve and the go-around are improved. "I still think that you have to work on the glide when approaching the turns and then the skating when you come out of them", analyzes the Briton, also satisfied with his first laps on new tires.
When the grip is lacking on the other hand – on race day, in particular – the M1 satellite remains difficult to move forward, he explains while the Spanish n ° 44 focused more on the braking phase, phase who handicapped him during the last two GPs … and that he would have significantly improved on Monday.
Penultimate test, Danilo Petrucci unfortunately had to cut his test short because of an engine failure. His teammate Scott Redding finished in 9th place, a good distance from Tito Rabat (10th). But paradoxically, the happiest of all the drivers was the last in the standings…
He is the brother of Sam Lowes (Moto2 rider who left for Misano to try the Aprilia RS-GP this week alongside the Ducati de MotoGP and WSBK): Alex, official Yamaha rider in WSBK, who was able to do a few laps on the handlebars of his teammate’s M1 (Pol Espargaro).
