Magic Mike in a Magic team 250 in 2009 !
At only 20 years old, the Toulouse-based Mike di Meglio has achieved a triple feat: rebounding after a difficult period, reconciling France with a world title and signing a contract in 250 within the most popular team, that of Jorge Aspar Martinez !
2009: alongside Bautista !
An enviable status which does not, however, mask the harsh reality of the Grands Prix: French nationality is not really the ideal passport to obtain a good handlebars and despite his world title, Mike will have to fight hard to get into a 250! Contacted by Aprilia and by KTM, the Toulouse driver is struggling to find a motorcycle for 2009, especially since he is – quite logically – demanding a machine and a high-performance team..
But following his demonstration in Australia and the support of powerful Carmelo Ezpeleta – the leader of Dorna appreciating that his disciplines have multiple nationalities on the starting grid – Mike di Meglio manages to interest a renowned team manager: Jorge Aspar Martinez! Contacts are established and from the last race in Valence, Site is happy to announce to its readers a probable arrangement to come between the two parties (read).
It is therefore now official: Mike di Meglio will indeed be the teammate of the smiling Alvaro Bautista, one of the main protagonists of the 2008 season against the brilliant Marco Simoncelli! Like this one, Mike will make his debut on an Aprilia LE – a 2008 model – while Bautista and Gabor Talmacsi, also in Aspar’s colors, will compete in the championship with a last generation RSA..
"Today I am very happy", congratulates Mike di Meglio."I had very good results this year with the title and there I made one of the best teams, if not the best, in 250. I can only be happy !".
Mike, who will permanently seal his union (a one-year contract with an optional additional year) with his new team on November 24 during the Valencia tests, explains that he wanted to take his time and that he expects a lot from this first season in the quarter-liter category: "we didn’t want to rush things because I feel I have the potential to quickly take my marks in the 250. For me, this first season will be very important for the rest of my career. I wanted to have guarantees, especially on the technical and material aspects. We therefore had to leave enough time to finalize our agreement. And then the team also wanted us to prepare our entry well before officially announcing it", explains the happy pilot.
The young Toulouse player will take his first steps in this spectacular 250 category within an experienced team and alongside the talented Alvaro Bautista: "It’s very nice to have Alvaro as a teammate. I will be able to rely on his references and take advantage of his experience to adapt well to the 250", says the French.
For now, Mike di Meglio is still savoring the joy of his first world title because in less than ten days, he knows he will have to discover a whole new universe. Leaving the 50 hp or so of his slender 125, in favor of a heavier machine, with double power and delicate adjustment, the talented pilot is heading towards a new challenge: "I am currently working on the preparation of my two days of testing (November 24 and 25, Editor’s note) where I will discover my new motorcycle. I will analyze this year’s Valencia Grand Prix in 250 to give myself some benchmarks and help me adapt my driving on Aprilia", explains Mike di Meglio calmly, who wants to quickly prove his worth after six long seasons in 125.
