Moto Morini 9 1/2 test

What am I?

In the legendary guess show, the 91/2 would have been a difficult candidate to crack. After the first visual contact? and even more so after the first exit. Cruiser, roadster, streetfighter? The new Motorbike Morini is a complex personality.

Have a two cylinder V engine? Yes. Is this engine also used in other vehicles? Yes. Do you have a tubular space frame? Yes. Are you painted red? Yes. You are a Ducati! No.

New trial. With Robert Lemke it would have been the turn of the next guesser, and the candidate would have had twenty marks in the "little pig." But “What am I” has not existed for a long time, instead of D-Mark the euro applies, and Ducati is no longer the only Italian motorcycle brand that relies on the longitudinally installed V2. Aprilia, Cagiva and recently again Moto Morini are also bustling in this business.

But that’s not the only reason why answering the famous question is difficult even after several hundred test kilometers on the new Morini 91/2. The model name, which can lead on the wrong track, is also not decisive. Still: 91/2 ?? Anyone who guesses just under a liter of displacement is fundamentally wrong. Although those responsible for Morini originally wanted to rifle the 87-degree 1200 from the Corsaro down to 998 cubic centimeters for this use: In view of the limited capacity, they left it and the "Bialbero CorsaCorta" with narrower intake ducts, smaller valve cross-sections and new timing to the new one Purpose trimmed.

And what purpose now? What a strange mixture of a still muscular V-twin cylinder (nominally 117 HP), wide Streetfighter handlebars, raised two-in-one exhaust system, powerful upside-down fork, but definitely classic lines with circular headlights and Spoked wheels? Retro bike, classy roadster, cozy cruiser?

It is one thing above all else: a motor bike. With a very strong emphasis on "engine". This V2 dominates every meter on the 91/2. If you take a look at the test bench curves, you only understand half the story. No curve in the world, no multifunctional instrument, no analog or digital speedometer can show what the driver perceives with the slightest sugar on the throttle of the Moto Morini. How greedy the extreme short-stroke (bore times stroke: 107 times 66 millimeters) depends on the gas. How robust he is. How it roars louder from the airbox with every millimeter of throttle opening, how every single combustion is as noticeable as a volcanic eruption. And how relentlessly the V2 then stamps forward and almost inevitably heaves the front wheel towards the sky at every traffic light. This temperament is no doubt reminiscent of an athlete.

But only for a short time. So between 3000 and 4000 rpm. With regard to the speed in sixth gear, this means: between 70 and 110 km / h. So best roadster pace. Then the elemental forces ebb away. The 91/2 twin by no means continues to turn as freely and uninhibited as its sporty sister Corsaro, but despite the long gear ratio it always delivers enough thrust (roughly on the Honda CBF 1000 level) for a brisk country trip.

And there are more facets. Murderer-wide, butted handlebars, footpegs positioned comparatively far forward ?? the seating position is more reminiscent of a cruiser, at least goes through as casual, but without thwarting driving dynamic ambitions from the outset. you
is actually quite comfortable permanently. In addition, in view of the relaxed posture in every curve, one is amazed again at the decent ground clearance of the Morini, which also shines with lively steering behavior and becomes a real corner robber on taut asphalt.

The restriction, however, must be made, because undulating terrain is not the thing of the 91/2. Neither the powerful 50s Marzocchi upside-down fork nor the Paioli mono-spring strut respond sensitively. In addition, both lack damping, so that there is a lot of unrest in the load on waves. The non-adjustable fork literally tramples over short, quickly successive paragraphs, which can be really uncomfortable, especially in an inclined position.

But back to cruising. 7.2 liters of super for a leisurely stroll through the country roads are way too much. So it is of little consolation that the tank holds a whopping 20.8 liters. For this you can book G-Kat and Euro 3 on the credit side. And the fact that the 91/2 can also be used as a roadster in addition to the cruiser if required. And a little bit the athlete. Which means we have not come any closer to the answer to the initial question.
