Tarform Luna Racer and Scrambler can be pre-ordered

E-motorcycle with innovative concepts

The start-up company Tarform, with roots in Sweden and a location in the USA, announced its first electric motorcycle in 2018. Almost two years later, the so-called Luna can now be pre-ordered in two versions, Scrambler and Racer.

AT.Tarform also wants to have approached the topic of motorized two-wheelers from a completely new direction – the result is an electric motorcycle with a conventional design and a retro look. The delivery of the first Tarform electric motorcycle was supposed to start at the end of 2019, but apparently nothing came of it. In mid-June 2020, the manufacturer announced that the bike will be called Luna and in both editions "Scrambler" and "Racer" can be pre-ordered. The delivery of the first basic models is now planned for 2021.

Parts from the 3D printer

The base price, which was initially announced at $ 18,000, has been increased to $ 24,000 for the base model. A deposit of $ 500 is still required. In addition, as announced two years ago, the Tarform is also being offered as a noble Founders Edition. The handcrafted Founders Edition, limited to 54 pieces, has a base price of a whopping 42,000 dollars.

The handlebar comes from the 3D printer.

In return, the Tarform customer receives an elaborately crafted single-seater electric motorcycle. The conventionally designed tubular steel frame carries a dummy tank monocoque made of sheet aluminum, triple clamps and even the handlebar, which encloses the round instrument cluster, are to be created using the 3D printing process. The rear swing arm is supported by a central spring strut, and an upside-down fork guides the bike at the front. If desired, the suspension elements can be upgraded so that Ohlins components can be installed. A keyless start system has also been integrated by the manufacturer.

Up to 193 km range

In the scrambler edition, the wheels themselves come as a classic wire spoke construction and are covered with heavily profiled tires. Together with the leather bench and various copper applications, they give it that retro touch. The Racer Edition has less large tires and is more or less the pure road version of the Luna.

In addition to the Scrambler Edition, the Luna is also known as the so-called "Racer" give.

Conventional disc brakes are used for deceleration. The lighting at the front and rear is of course based on LED technology, as are the indicators, which are located in the handlebars. The manufacturer has meanwhile also commented on the electric motor, which, together with the battery, fills the entire space below the dummy fuel tank. Tea Tarform Luna is powered by a 55 HP PMAC electric motor, which should enable top speeds of up to 153 km / h. In combination with a 10 kWh lithium-ion battery, ranges of up to 193 kilometers should be possible. Of course, it depends on how and where the 181 kilogram Luna is moved – the tidy mentioned should be possible in the so-called city mode. The battery should be able to be charged to up to 80 percent within 50 minutes. The final drive takes place via a very open, but conventional chain.

Artificial intelligence and modular components

When it was first introduced, Tarform announced that it would give the Luna an artificial intelligence, which above all should have a positive effect on the safety of the driver. In addition to various connectivity functions, a rear camera and a blind spot assistant were originally planned. In addition, the software should learn independently and make driving even safer. However, the manufacturer probably underestimated the implementation of such features, which ultimately led to the production delay.

Tarform’s new electric motorcycle prices start at $ 24,000.

In the meantime, however, Tarform has apparently found solutions and production can slowly but surely start up. The driver is alerted by a vibrating seat if there is danger from the side or away from the field of vision. The rear-facing camera should also show what cannot be seen in the rearview mirror. Bluetooth connectivity and a suitable app should also be ready to go. A so-called "Sonic Aura Acoustic Sound System" is intended to ensure that the electric motorcycle is perceived acoustically even at low speeds. Tarform has also decided to use a modular design for the Luna. According to the manufacturer, various components can be replaced with better components afterwards, if desired. Apart from that, Tarform is promoting the Luna as the most sustainable motorcycle ever. For example, many of the built-in materials should be largely recyclable – but the manufacturer does not provide precise information on this.

Conclusion

Tarform does not seem to be lacking in good ideas and plenty of creativity. How well the announced features will work is another matter. We are excited to see if and when we will see Luna on the streets.
