MotoGP returns to Finland on the new KymiRing circuit in 2019
It’s confirmed: the 2019 MotoGP lineup will feature an additional Grand Prix scheduled for the KymiRing circuit under construction in Litti, Finland. Five-year contract seals Finnish GP return after 36-year absence from famed Jarno Saarinen. With in the short term, the objective of reaching the 20 meetings planned by the promoter Dorna…
This agreement planned since was formalized yesterday Wednesday in Helsinki (Finland) in the presence of the promoters of the Grand Prix (Dorna Sports), the president of the Finnish Motorcycling Federation and the various managers of the KymiRing project, a new circuit under construction at Litti in southern Finland. The last time the Continental Circus visited Finland was in 1981, in Imatra.
Traced in a natural setting, this 4.6 km track is part of a new sports complex and revolves around a fairly winding section followed by a faster section. Its owners and Dorna expect an influx of "100,000 spectators", a rather high estimate that they justify by the interest of Finns in motor sports in general, and motorcycles in particular..
"The Finns are connoisseurs", says Carmelo Ezpeleta, leader of Dorna."Finland has always been immersed in motorsport and we have had several very talented Finnish riders in MotoGP in the past. I remember Jarno Saarinen and more recently Mika Kallio as well as many others".
Jarno Saarinen’s shadow will hover over the KymiRing
If the fame of Mika Kallio (currently development rider of the MotoGP RC16 KTM) may not be enough on its own to fill the stands of the KymiRing, that of his illustrious elder Jarno Saarinen – tragically deceased in an accident at Monza (Italy) in 1973 – will undoubtedly have a positive effect …
The first rider to practice swaying in motorcycle races, the “Flying Finn” indeed possessed exceptional talent, which had enabled him to scrap in 350cc in 1972 with the maestro of the time, Giacomo Agostini. A year later, for his first season in the premier class (500cc), many hopes were placed on Saarinen, one of the few who could worry "Ago".
After proving his talent via two victories, Jarno Saarinen unfortunately saw his meteoric rise in Monza during the 250cc race: hit by Pasolini in the first curve, the Finn did not get up. His Italian rival either …
19 Grands Prix from 2018, 20 in 2019 ?
With the arrival of the Finnish Grand Prix in the MotoGP calendar in 2019, the programming could span 19 appointments, if none of the 18 current destinations are removed from the list. According to our information, the milestone of 20 races planned by Dorna could even be reached since an additional round is already scheduled for 2018. !
- MNC of May 20, 2015 : Thailand, Indonesia: for or against 20 Grands Prix per year in MotoGP ?
"The calendar will count 19 races next year", recently confirmed Herve Poncharal, team manager of Tech3 and president of the association of teams in Grand Prix (IRTA), without however specifying the destination concerned to MNC … MNC’s little finger suggests that this additional meeting should take place during the fall of 2018 in Thailand, on the Buriram circuit where the WSBK championship is already going, also managed by Dorna..
An agreement has thus already been found between the MotoGP treasurer and the owners of the Asian circuit, which should logically be inserted during the traditional tour of the Pacific (Motegi, Phillip Island and Sepang). It should also be noted that the new circuit of Sokol, in Kazakhstan, is also in the line to integrate the MotoGP programming in the near future …
Dorna, however, having indicated his desire to contain his calendar to 20 meetings maximum, this would mean that a current route would leave the list … Will the organizer make room for a new country by reducing the sails on the destinations Spanish, very represented with four circuits this year (Jerez, Barcelona, Aragon and Valencia)? To be continued on MNC !
