While the Italians had hoped for a small miracle and a victory for Vale after Valentino Rossi’s pole position, it was already clear at the start of the Grand Prix in Mugello who should set the racing pace. Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati), coming from second place, reacted the fastest when the traffic lights went out and the Mallorcan turned into turn one while in the lead. Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) also made up positions in the first meters and moved up to third place in the second corner with a tough maneuver against Danilo Petrucci, in which he almost sent the Pramac driver into the gravel, and went short then passed Valentino Rossi, who was in second place. Things didn’t go so well for second Honda works driver Dani Pedrosa. The little Spaniard, who had been struggling with a lot of problems all weekend, went down in lap one. Shortly afterwards, Scott Redding (Gresini Aprilia), Karal Abraham (Team Angel Nieto Ducati), Jack Miller (Pramac Ducati) and Tom Luthi (Marc VdS Honda) also retired due to a crash. Maverick Vinales was also one of the losers in the first round. The Yamaha works driver could not use his good starting position in the front row and fell back to 11th place.

The fastest man on the track in the early stages was Danilo Petrucci, who started the race to catch up with anger after Marquez’s bump. His opponent from turn two wanted too much at the same time. Marquez fell over the front wheel in second place. The Spaniard was able to continue the race afterwards, but had to line up behind the field again. In the end it was only enough for sixteen. The second Ducati works driver Andrea Dovizisoso and Andrea Iannone (Suzuki) took advantage of the gap and relegated Valentino Rossi to fifth place.

Lorenzo dominates, Rossi is persistent

While Jorge Lorenzo had found his rhythm in the middle of the race and was leading the field by a good second ahead of his team-mate Andrea Dovizioso, the battle for the final podium turned into an exciting exchange of blows between Valentino Rossi, Andrea Iannone and who was fifth at the time lying Danilo Petrucci. After mistakes by Iannone and Rossi in the duel, Petrucci used the Ducati Power and was able to move up to third place for a short time. The beneficiary of the three-way battle was the two Suzuki drivers, Alex Rins, who was able to fight his way up to the three again due to the exchange of blows.

The final phase was unhappy for Danilo Petrucci. Qualifying

The MotoGP qualifying in Mugello could not have gone better for the Italian Tifosi. While at the beginning of qualifying it was Marc Marquez who went first on the track and set the fastest time twice in a row, Andrea Iannone (Suzuki), the first Italian, got going just before half-time and drove a new one with a time of 1: 46.347 minutes , unofficial lap record. Iannone had dominated the training up to this point and only had to admit defeat to the reigning world champion in the third free practice. In the end, however, it was another Italian on a blue motorcycle who drove the absolute fastest lap and will start from the very front in tomorrow’s race.

Rossi surprises with Pole

Shortly before the end of qualifying, it was Maverick Vinales, Marc Marquez, Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi who fought for pole among themselves. All four drivers managed to drive faster than the current lap record again. But three minutes before the end it was Valentino Rossi who set the absolute best with a time of 1: 46.208 minutes.

Andrea Iannone was very quick in all training sessions, but in the end had to be satisfied with starting position 4.

Second on the grid goes to Ducati works driver Jorge Lorenzo at least as surprisingly.
