Superpole Losail: Rea sweeps his record and the competition
Jonathan Rea has never won in Qatar. But this year, the Qatari circuit will have a hard time resisting the n ° 1 Kawasaki who has just improved his record … and disgusted his opponents! Our French pilots Guintoli and Guarnoni qualify in 10th and 17th places.
The very last Superpole event has just taken place on the Losail circuit, in Qatar and of course at night! Two Kawasaki riders particularly shone during these qualifications: our international n ° 05 Sylvain Guintoli in SP1, then the triple n ° 1 Jonathan Rea in SP2…
Last to come out of the pits during the first Superpole session, Sylvain Guintoli immediately placed his Kawasaki Puccetti at the top of the timesheet, far ahead of the official Honda of Giugliano and Gagne. The fourth position is then occupied by the Kawasaki Pedercini of our second representative on this final WSBK 2017 event: Jeremy Guarnoni !
Roman Ramos on Team Go Eleven’s Ninja and then Raffaele de Rosa on his BMW Althea came within a quarter of a second of our 2014 WSBK champion but failed to dislodge him from first place. The pilots return to the pits to put on soft tires…
Leon Camier manages to complete a cannon lap on the handlebars of the only MV Agusta on the field and takes control of the session. De Rosa confirms his speed by setting the second fastest time, but the Spanish n ° 35 is deprived of SP2 by "Guinters" who is the last to pass under the checkered flag, with the best time of the session !
De Rosa will therefore have to settle for 13th place on the Qatari grid. Giugliano and Ramos will stand at his side. Our dear Guarnoni will start from the middle of the sixth row, behind Ramos and ahead of Gagne. Jezek and Rolfo will install their Kawasaki Grillini at the back of the grid.
Guintoli and Camier join the ten fastest drivers of the first day, directly qualified for the second session of the Superpole. As always, Jonathan Rea plays the forerunners on the track and, as often, Eugene Laverty accommodates his RSV4 in the aspiration of the Kawasaki n ° 1. Fores (Ducati Barni) and Camier also try to follow the "Number One".
From the first loop, Rea sets the best time of the weekend: he goes down alone under 1.57! The ruthless "JR" still holds a sacred form … On racing tires, he turns six tenths faster than Alex Lowes then second in SP2, and the only driver to have beaten him in free practice, last night in FP2.
Sykes on the KRT’s Second Ninja is the third – and last! – pilot to be in the same second as the leader. Michael van den Mark on his factory Yamaha and Marco Melandri on his official Ducati are relegated to 1.2 seconds … Can the gaps be reduced with the qualifying Pirelli ?
Rea’s response is clear and flawless: no, none of his opponents can challenge him for the Superpole on the Losail circuit. "Johnny" completes his "One man show" with a resounding 1 ‘56.228, improving by more than a tenth of a second his record set in 2016.
Two weeks after checking off Jerez, Jonathan Rea is firmly determined to secure his first victory on the Losail circuit. Alex Lowes and Tom Sykes who confirm their places on the first row are respectively dropped to four and eight tenths of a second. Hard !
Very close to each other, the men in the second row are relegated to 1.2 seconds behind the poleman: Lorenzo Savadori and Eugene Laverty supervise Xavi Fores. They can congratulate themselves on beating Michael van der Mark, Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri, who were expected higher up on the timesheet.
Sylvain Guintoli finally qualifies at the head of the fourth row, ahead of Jordi Torres and Leon Camier. Can "Guinters" improve his place in the race? Will Guarnoni enter the points? Will Jonathan Rea give everyone a spin? Answers to follow on Site: stay connected !
