Duel Ducati 1100 Vs Triumph 1200 XC: Scrambler against Scrambler
Two members of the Scrambler family are opposed on Site: the 1100 Special Ducati released last year and the all new 1200 XC Triumph! Which motorcycle to keep after this duel? MNC carefully studies the question and gives you its answer…
Duel Scrambler 1100 Vs 1200 XC page 1: The "spaghetti" Scrambler
The family of "Scrambler" motorcycles is numerous. It even keeps getting bigger, because fashion effect the perennial success that neo-retro type machines obtain with bikers and their appeal for all-terrain – or "all-pavement".
Two manufacturers stand out in the Scrambler niche market. Two adversaries that Site already had: Ducati then launched its brand new Scrambler "Icon" 800 and Triumph continued to offer its iconic Scrambler 900…

- MNC Scrambler Duel : The Ducati Icon versus the Triumph Icon
Four years later, Site readers – who, as everyone knows, are a little luckier than others – are entitled to a remake of the Scrambler (Ducati) versus Scrambler (Triumph) duel. Headlining in 2019, the new stars have gained muscle. Finally, cubic capacity !
At Ducati, the big 1100 cc Scrambler cube (1079 according to the technical sheet, see last page). Released three years after the acclaimed Scrambler 800, it is just blowing its first candle. We can consider it as the original of this duel, in the sense that it "differs from the common, out of the ordinary"…
At Triumph, the big 1200 cc Scrambler cube (1197 according to the learned MNC calculations). The latest in a long line, he has just arrived in dealerships. We can consider it as the original of this duel, in the sense that it "emanates directly from its author or from its source, is not a copy, a reproduction, a translation, a recast".
Two "original" versions
In 2014, Ducati was a huge success thanks to its Scrambler 800. More than a new model, the Italians did not hesitate to consider their new phenomenon as a brand (yellow) in its own right, quite distinct from the main one (red ).
The friendly entry-level Italian has also been declined in all sauces: Bolognese, carbonara, Icon, Full Throttle, Flat Track Pro, Mach 2.0, Cafe Racer, Desert Sled … In 2019, the 800 evolves slightly but the recipe does not vary: compact size, featherweight, lively engine and neo-retro look.
In 2016, on the other hand, the Scrambler Sixty2 had not met its public of surfers / skateboarders: the half-portion (400 cc) at the too steep bill (8,000 euros!) Was a commercial failure with only 167 registrations in the first year. in France, then 30 in 2017 and again 30 last year.
- MNC special file :
In 2018, Ducati tested the opposite formula: offering Scrambler 800 owners to ride an 1100. At the same time, the manufacturer was trying to appeal to fans of good old "air" Mostro, insensitive to the charms of the very latest Monsters " water ". The results are positive: 367 Scrambler 1100 were registered in France last year, compared to 224 Monster 1200 (standard and R).
In its argument, Ducati announces the presence in its "big" Scrambler of a new L-Twin. But Site readers – who, as everyone knows, are a little more observant than others – will have recognized the features and ratings of Desmodue…
The Italian engine charms with its thin cooling fins and meticulously machined crankcases. The braided hoses connecting – from the left – the oil cooler are not as "fashion" as thermal bands on the manifolds, but they offer a welcome little "racing" touch. Too bad, however, that the horn is so carelessly attached right next to it.
Likewise, too many pipes and wires are – far – too apparent … We therefore regret that the engine manufacturers of the 1100 did not further fine-tune their product, because they lost one point against their English colleagues. !
The site does not include the choice of the Italians to install exhausts on either side of the passenger seat: this evokes more of a "neo-mostro" look than neo-retro … The spirit of the scramblers of yesteryear is absolutely not respected! That said, the low exhaust of the Scrambler 800 did not shock bikers in any way..
Ducati France, however, has “pot” for this new MNC duel: the subsidiary which did not have a Scrambler 1100 on our running dates is directing us to its Espace Murit dealer (multi-brand in Châtillon, in Hauts-de-Seine). The latter kindly entrusts us with the keys of a used vehicle: a "Special" model..
A "very" Special version
In this variation, the "spaghetti" Scrambler adopts a gray color (sober) and a brown saddle (class), topstitched and quilted diamonds. In addition, the mudguards shaped a bit – too much? – convoluted, the tank sides and other trim parts are in aluminum, often brushed.
The bike’s stocky and short rear requires a long plate holder, but thin enough to go almost unnoticed. The view of the rear studded tire (“what else”?) Mounted on its spoked rim (“what did you expect”?) Is thus completely clear. Well seen" !
"Our" Scrambler 1100 Special is also equipped with an accessory that makes it even more attractive: a side Termignoni double pot with ribbed ends – for more fun? – and openwork protections. This is more in line with the scrambler style! Note that this beautiful appendix is displayed on the online configurator at 1600 euros. Yes all the same…
On the left side of the bike, the single, offset shock absorber is a solution that seems too modern: at Ducati, the Panigales use the same type of rear suspension. Very large, the double swing arm inspires confidence. On the other hand, the rear buckle and the passenger footrest plate look excessively massive..
At the front, the solid inverted fork is devoid of bellows and protection. Here again, the Italians voluntarily break with traditions. Unlike the Scrambler 800 which is satisfied with a single disc at the front, the 1100 doubles the stake.
Le Journal moto du Net observes that the presence of the double disc is due more to the rank of the 1100 than to its performance or its weight: the 800 cc Desert Sled develops 73 horsepower and weighs 209 kg when fully loaded, while the Special of 1100 cc comes out "only" 86 ch and accuses only 2 kg more on the scale of the manufacturer.
The Scrambler 1100 also introduces new instrumentation. Always fully digital and always in black and white, the screen of the big Italian Scrambler has an additional part that isolates the two main information: speed and the gear indicator light. The original route of the front brake hose is retained: by passing clearly above the speedometer, it never disturbs the pilot’s view.
Simple and efficient, the controls allow you to quickly scroll through additional information (see practical aspects and equipment on page 4) or to select one of the three engine modes. The electronic arsenal is completed by an ABS on the angle, from which the Triumph Scrambler 1200 also benefits … but in its top-of-the-range XE version only! Let’s discover together the XC version with "simple" ABS on the next page…
