All Duels - Duel ER-6n Vs MT-07: Yamaha stirs up the Greens! - One TM can hide another ...

The easiest way to compete with a bestseller is to take inspiration from it to create a similar but even more efficient motorcycle. Yamaha continues this approach with its new MT-07, a roadster fun enough to shake up the Kawasaki ER-6n ! Duel.

One TM can hide another…

Thanks to its new "MT" family, Yamaha is returning to the roadster segment, a particularly crucial category from a commercial point of view, especially in France. Comfortable leader on the, Kawasaki is the most threatened by this strategy of (re) conquest: the sulphurous and unloads it with the firm intention to unbolt the reference ER-6n…

In addition to this Kawasaki ER-6n Vs Yamaha MT-07 duel, also discover our !

Aware that the challenge is difficult – the ER-6 has been the best-selling motorcycle for two years in France – Yamaha is not going into battle with a grain of salt: our has revealed a motorcycle with multiple qualities, capable of satisfying beginner bikers like to give a smile to the more experienced.

The novelty Yamaha is therefore posed as a weapon of mass destruction, capable of reaching a target near which have passed – sometimes very close – all the previous "missiles" (read in particular our comparative tests and) !

However, if the MT-07 is right, it is also because it was inspired by its "enemy" to calibrate the shot: by comparing the two motorcycles, certain aesthetic and technical similarities appear immediately. Starting with their slender silhouette and their contained dimensions: 2110 mm long and 770 mm wide for the Kawa, 2085 and 745 mm for the Yam ‘.

Both built around a tubular steel frame (nicely split on the ER-6), they employ the same type of "fashionable" stylistic solutions: a short silencer in the low position, petal brake discs ( 300 mm at the front on the Kawa against 282 on the Yam ‘), white indicators and a raised hull housing an LED light.

And to propel it all to the front of the stage, a parallel twin of similar displacement (649 cc on the Green against 689 cc on the Blue).

When stationary, however, several differences can be observed: regularly revamped to keep the favors of a young audience – and rather versatile -, the ER-6n appears more "dressed" than the MT-07.

Plastic covers descend on its telescopic fork (not adjustable, like that of the Yamaha), prominent scoops frame the radiator, a shoe conceals part of the exhaust pipes, while a small wind burst overcomes a headlight. also surrounded by plastic.

Beside, the Yamaha seems almost "naked", in the pure "naked" roadster style, with the exception of the mesh scoops placed along its tank. Other side of the coin: novelty offers the eye all its most beautiful attributes … but also its small imperfections.

So, if we appreciate the care taken by Yamaha in its presentation – like the finely chiseled bronze engine housings, the beautiful openwork swingarm on the right or the polished interior of the monobloc brake calipers – it does not. The same does not apply to the view of the front part of the frame, on which a cover would not have been superfluous at the level of the mountings on the engine. The finish remains excellent for a motorcycle less than 6000 euros..

Same positive feeling when detailing the Kawasaki, which has made good progress in this area over the vintages. As on the Yamaha, some wires and some cables could be better integrated and the welds are sometimes a little "thick", but not enough to put your spleen in court bouillon! Especially if we remember the "utilities of Pacherkistan" aspect of some entry-level roadsters of yesteryear….

Static: Yamaha knows music !

In the saddle, the monochrome digital screen chosen by Yamaha attracts attention, then arouses satisfaction. Large and readable (except for the small graduations of the engine speed), it is extremely complete for the category, more in any case than the half-analog, half-digital instrumentation of the ER-6n, on which the ” engaged gear indicator always points to absent subscribers (see the list of practical aspects and equipment on the penultimate page).

Also providing information on the temperature of the engine and the air, the instrumentation of the MT-07 is read all the more naturally as the distance which separates it from the eyes is less than on the ER-6n. The handlebars of the Yamaha, narrower (72 cm measured against 74), are indeed installed closer to the bust, without however exerting additional constraints because its handlebar is less pronounced than that of the Kawasaki.

Slim in size and low in the saddle (805 mm), the two rivals enjoy remarkable accessibility, even for the "shortest on boots". The MT-07 takes a small advantage in this area, because its shock absorber is more flexible than that of the Green sinks a few millimeters more under the weight of the pilot. Its saddle is also narrower and less thick, which reduces the arch applied to the thighs..

To the detriment, however, of comfort, frankly passable on the front part of the seat of the Yamaha … Equipped with a remarkably comfortable saddle for a motorcycle of this type, the ER-6n drives the point home by deploying respects including the MT-07 is devoid: a small "U" enters its trunk (at best a disc lock for its rival), its two levers are adjustable (only the brake on the Yam ‘), while the grab handles and rubber trims on the footrests take care of the passenger’s reception.

Too bad that the Kawasaki inflicts a rather pronounced fold in the legs – especially the larger ones – due to the footrests fixed significantly higher and back than on the MT-07, otherwise it won high the glove this first confrontation with the engine off. On the other hand, the more athletic will appreciate this more dynamic ergonomics, a guarantee of good mobility on the bike to tackle small curves. !

Aesthetes will praise the visual purity perceived on the handlebars of the Yamaha, on which the switch is fixed in front of the meter to clear the view: by leaning a little, it is even possible to glimpse the tip of the 120 mm tire. wide (same dimension on the Kawasaki)! The feeling of compactness released by the bike is reinforced, while you finally get used to rather quickly putting the ignition "blind"..

Then, when the two cylinders and the eight valves of the vertical twin of the MT-07 wake up under the impulse of the starter, it is with the music lovers that the new Yamaha scores big points: hoarse and deep, its soundtrack gives the feeling of emanating from a larger displacement.

Drier and smacker, that of the ER-6n hammers the eardrums less pleasantly, while vibrations creep into the hands and buttocks from low revs. A small rotation of the Yamaha throttle and a rather enjoyable mechanical rattle escapes from its silencer from 4000 rpm: renowned manufacturer of musical instruments, the brand with three tuning forks once again benefits from its knowledge -make acoustics to delight the senses !

And when we know the sums paid by certain bikers, young or old, to exchange their original silencer against an adaptable one with a more melodious sound, Yamaha’s effort appears particularly relevant. The ER-6n shows the blow, while the MT-07 starts the second part of this match by rolling mechanics…
