All Duels - Duel Tuono V4R APRC Vs Speed Triple R: roadsters with big Rs - Technical update on the Triumph Speed Triple R

Equipped like racing motorcycles, the ultra sporty roadsters reach new heights in terms of pure performance. The proof with this MNC Duel between two European motorcycles that send the R: Aprilia Tuono V4 R APRC and Triumph Speed Triple R !

Technical update on the Triumph Speed Triple R

A "courier" version of the standard Speed Triple, the Speed Triple R uses exactly the same engine: a 1050 cc double ACT, 12-valve in-line 3-cylinder engine, which develops 135 hp at 9400 rpm and 111 Nm of torque at 4950 rpm all over the world … except of course in France.

Recently revised (read our), the "tripeul" has gained in performance thanks to a new air box, a revised and lighter exhaust system and an increase in the size of the inter-cylinder transfers in order to reduce energy losses.

More powerful by 5 horses and more torque of 8 Nm than the, this exceptional three-legged is not as modern as its adversary of the day. For example, the accelerator remains faithful to a good old cable to control the sequential injection – unlike the Tuono V4, but also the Explorer and the Trophy 1200 which use a Ride-By-Wire.

This is the reason why the English roadster ignores traction control, although we find this device on the maxi-trail and the Triumph road. Likewise, if the very complete dashboard (read our table "Practical aspects" on the next page) does not include a gear indicator engaged, it is not an oversight: the installation of the sensor necessary for the operation of this system requires an overhaul of the engine casings. So it will be for the next evolution !

On the other hand, the Speed Triple R releases many modifications on the transmission side: the multi-disc clutch in oil bath – devoid of anti-dribble, unlike the Aprilia – is identical, but the six-speed box receives shafts and modified axes, as well as a new selection drum.

The number of dogs has also increased from four to five and they are announced to be more resistant. Finally, particular care has been taken to reduce friction inside the gearbox, in particular by reducing the clearance tolerances on each gear..

It is on the chassis side that the R model differs from the standard Speed Triple: the chassis and its aluminum side members do not receive any particular modification, but the damping is seriously upgraded with a 43 mm Ohlins NIX30 fork. and a TTX36 rear shock, also from the Swedish manufacturer.

Adjustable in all directions (preload, rebound and compression), these "ultra-high-end" suspensions are hardly less sophisticated than those used in World Superbike! As for braking, it gains 5% more power thanks to the use of Brembo monobloc calipers of higher quality than those of the standard Speed..

Recognizable by their anodized finish, these radially mounted calipers can work in conjunction with the optional disconnectable ABS. At the same time, the Speed Triple R adopts even sportier tires: Pirelli Super Corsa SP instead of the already very efficient Metzeler Interact K3 fitted to the "straightforward" Speed Triple..

Italian tires take their place on rims first forged by Otto Fuchs and then machined in the workshops of PVM. Thanks to their reduced thickness (2.5 mm against 4 mm for the cast rims of the standard Speed), these new wheels reduce the unsprung weight by 0.7 kg at the front and 1 kg at the rear. This would concretely translate into a reduction in inertia of the order of "16% at the front and 25% at the rear", believes Triumph.

It is mainly thanks to its competitor rims that the Speed Triple R displays 2 kg less on the scale (212 kg fully loaded against 214 for the standard Speed Triple), but also a handling and a liveliness clearly superior to the basic version.
