All Duels - Pan-European Duel Vs FJR 1300 2013: GT on the road! - A decade of gap development!

With these two motorcycles, it is not only two generations of GTs that clash, but two driving philosophies. Which one of the FJR sportswoman or the valiant Pan-European will win over the kilometers? ? Answers in our essay.

A decade of gap development !

The 1300 FJR and the 1300 Pan-European were born around the same time (2001 for the Yamaha and 2002 for the Honda), but only the FJR has just undergone a makeover (read).

This upgrade was deserved, since the FJR had hardly changed since its release: it was content to adopt ABS in 2003 (read our) and to offer a semi-automatic AS version (without clutch) in 2006 (read our). The well-born FJR has made the happiness of the big rollers and some administrations, but Yamaha had to react to a competition – German, in particular – more and more harsh !

The least we can say is that Yamaha has managed to keep the original spirit of its FJR. It even takes a shrewd eye to differentiate the old version from the new! If its stern is perfectly identical, its bow evolves smoothly with pretty daytime running lights and LED indicators..

But the novelties are rather hidden under its fairings, with a revised engine which gains, among other things, traction control and an adjustable injection map in two modes (Touring or Sport). In addition, the proposed equipment goes up a notch with the appearance of a cruise control.

For its part, the Pan-European is also acclaimed by the roule-toujours, with its final transmission by cardan shaft and its distribution by chain. It is now approaching its quarter of a century of existence since it appeared in 1989 in a version of 1100 cc.

It quickly became a real technological showcase for Honda: in 1992, it was the first motorcycle to offer traction control in addition to front-to-rear coupled braking (and ABS introduced by BMW in 1988). It was in 2002 that the 1300 cc version tested today appeared … with varying degrees of success. !

The new Pan-European ST 1300 had a somewhat tricky launch, as it suffered from chronic front end sway at high speed. In addition, if the famous anti-skating inaugurated on the previous model certainly lacked smoothness, Honda could undoubtedly have sought to improve it rather than abandoning it altogether on its new "Pan-Euro". Especially since it is placed at the time as one of the flagships of the range with its voluptuous V4 !
