Suzuki Burgman 400 Z / Yamaha Majesty 400: rififi among commuters !
Same displacement, same power, same weight and same color: how do you decide between the Suzuki Burgman 400 Z and Yamaha Majesty 400 scooters? Site put them through the hell of city traffic and the ordeal of the road… Comparative test.
Good for everything … except sport !
Despite their perfectly equivalent weight / power ratios (34 hp for a little over 220 kg with full fuel), our two scooters show different engine characteristics. The more efficient (and more recent!) Transmission of the Majesty allows it to tear itself out of fire with much more force than the Burgman, which takes a little longer to take off..
If we add better handling and an excellent turning radius, the Yamaha wins the prize for the most urban of our two competitors of the day..
The Burgman is doing very well nonetheless, but there is less incentive to squeeze like an eel in traffic jams. During urban changes, the Majesty’s driving position is more comfortable: upright, feet flat and legs moderately bent. The saddle height is lower on the Burgman (710 mm against 750 on the Yamaha) and the more lying position of its rider is more suitable for large axes than for urban gymkhana..

Crossing or bypassing the Paris region by major arteries such as the ring road, the A86 or the Ile-de-France is a simple formality for the two Japanese vessels..
On these often saturated axes, the authorized speed rarely exceeds 110 km / h. In this context, our two 400 cc move smoothly in traffic while maintaining a correct acceleration reserve to overtake or get out of a risky situation. With their mirrors attached to the handlebars and not to the fairing, they normally go up the lines of cars despite their respectable volumes.
Finally in an emergency, we can count on their powerful braking, safe and equipped with ABS (and even the rear coupled to the front on the Burgman). Be careful, however, because with their small wheels, the anti-lock is triggered quite quickly on the "greasy-leafy", especially at the rear.
What if we went to the sea ?
To really test their dynamic qualities and their road skills, we chose to take our two 400cc to Dieppe (76) via the schoolchildren path. And the verdict falls quickly, clear and without appeal: the two commuters are not sportsmen but many means of transport !
Thanks to its rigid chassis, the Majesty encourages you to enter hard in the turns, but its front axle cools very quickly. Even loading it well under braking, it remains quite light and bouncy, especially on bad surfaces..
On board the Burgman, it is exactly the opposite: the front axle is rather reassuring, but the frame tends to waddle when abruptly….
On this side, the Tmax can therefore continue to sleep soundly! But as long as we drive at a normal pace, our two scooters are far from unpleasant to ride alone or in pairs. Madame will certainly prefer the Suzuki for its passenger backrest and its large saddle, but it will also be very well installed on the Yamaha, with just a little difficulty to fit her feet on the footrests rather badly done….
And even the highway
On the motorway borrowed to return from Rouen, our two 400s are less at the party: their single cylinder gives almost everything to cruiser at legal speeds … At 140-145 km / h counter, the GPS displays around 130 chrono and the two scooters offer very soft recoveries.
In favor of a descent, they both hang painfully the 160-165 km / h counter, or more or less 150 stopwatch. Their windshields protect well, but send a little too much turbulence back into the helmet. Having said that, in the rain it becomes an advantage in wiping off the water drops in a very effective manner. In addition, our two competitors have tanks of the same capacity (14 liters). At a rather high rate, their consumption is around 5 l / 100 km, which allows you to exceed 200 km without worry..
