2015 R1 test: the Yamaha tracker to the test of the road
Of all the new sport bikes that MNC has tested on the track, the 2015 R1 has proven to be the most spellbinding. Does the charm also work on the road in 106 hp? What are the effects of its radical reorientation of racing on a daily basis? ? Answers after 850 km.
Yamaha sees red and leaves with a blank sheet
Discoveries on the circuit, the changes made in 2015 to, and impressed the Journal moto du Net. For reasons and in logically different proportions: the regular sharpening of the already very powerful European motorcycles is obviously more impressive than the arrival of ABS on Hamamatsu’s aging Superbike….
But according to MNC, the hypersport novelty of the year, the most sensational both literally and figuratively, is undoubtedly the 2015 Yamaha YZF-R1 (read our). With this completely new motorcycle, from its daring look to its A380-worthy electronics, including its 4-cylinder typed to the connecting rods, Yamaha did not just catch up: the R1 is getting back to fashion and immediately writes a new one !
Forgotten with heavy volumes and behavior: sharp as a blade, the new model weighs 7 kg less (199 kg fully loaded). A remarkable "cast iron" obtained through processes that are very competitive, such as its rear buckle and its magnesium rims (a first on a production motorcycle), its cylinder head cover and its oil pan made of the same precious material or still its 43 aluminum motor screws (steel on most motorcycles).
Exit also the lack of power and sophistication against the European technological jewels that are the F4, Panigale, RSV4 and S1000RR. Reviewed from top to bottom and reduced by "9%", the" Crossplane "engine of the R1 2015 gains in liveliness, length and especially in power: 200 hp announced, 18 more than before !
And yet this is only a performance measured statically, so without the high-speed contribution of the forced air channeled by its enormous front opening modeled on the MotoGP M1. In addition, this 4-cylinder would already be able to output 10 to 20 additional hp, without major modification or impact on its reliability. An interesting reserve of horses because it will facilitate the inevitable rise in power of the next vintage…
Fine-tuned for three years – with the help of a certain Valentino Rossi who still uses it regularly for training – the Iwata Superbike is also making a giant leap electronically thanks to transfers from MotoGP. Some of its "scholarly chips" are even completely new, like its "side control system" (SCS) responsible for managing the lateral drifts of the rear wheel (read our).
Like other assistance systems such as traction control, anti-wheeling and ABS coupled from front to back (a first on a Yamaha sports car), this SCS is informed by an inertial unit, a device capable of measuring movements on six axes via sensors such as accelerometers and inclinometers. This "electronic brain" finely adjusts the degree of action of each system according to a countless number of parameters, including the angle of the motorcycle..
But if all this technological debauchery and these high performance have proven to be particularly convincing on a circuit with a perfect grain of bitumen (reread our), MNC was eager to measure the interests – and the constraints – on the road, of the well-paved national road. to the departmental all wrinkled…
Let’s see how this new queen of the paddocks behaves on a daily basis: adorable on the track, is the 2015 R1 on the other hand unbearable on the road, as its extreme radicalization could lead to fear? MNC opens the investigation … and gas !
