All Test Drives - Test KTM 990 Adventure: Ready to Travel! - On the way: heading south with ease

If the KTM road bikes are more oriented Ready to Race in accordance with the slogan of the Austrian manufacturer, the Adventure 990 invites more to travel. MNC verified this in the South between sea and lavender, among cyclists and motorhomes. Test.

On the way: heading south with ease

The pace remains reasonable because the binoculars and the brand new Megane RS are out for the big summer departures … At 130 km / h meter, the Adventure turns peacefully at 5,000 rpm on 6th gear and it doesn’t is not frustrating to cross around 140-145 km / h odometer (a small 134-139 km / h in GPS).

The big twin can withstand a much higher cruising speed, but at the cost of increased consumption. If the bike hangs serenely over 200 km / h, we will hardly be tempted to exceed 170-180 km / h with the suitcases. Beyond that, the strong wind resistance of the suitcases – roomy but not very aerodynamic – frankly alters the stability.

Like an austrian pasha

The kilometers go by without the slightest fatigue. The high screen (optional at 119.50 €) fulfills its role very well by completely protecting the bust of the pilot. And above all, it does not create unpleasant turbulence in the helmet: a mistral of 80-90 km / h in full swing will allow us to confirm this during the ascent to Lyon !

On the motorway, the too static pilot ends up having a little sore buttocks … and he thinks about it more and more as the journey lengthens! On the road, however, a whole day can go by without experiencing the slightest discomfort..

Record to beat

Visually, the KTM trail tank is impressive. It is in fact made up of two reservoirs which communicate with each other but are filled separately. The overall capacity is not gigantic, since the Adventure carries only 20 liters.

With a fairly stable average consumption around 6.6 l / 100 km, we will therefore refuel every 220/250 km so as not to take any risk. MNC record to beat: 306 km (including 76.5 km in reserve)! Be careful, it will have been necessary to travel the last few hundred meters, stirring the bike like a plum tree to gain the last drops and arrive in freewheel at the station … Phew! Not bad, but we hoped for better on this type of bike.

The adventure for two

The KTM is not a selfish motorcycle. Like the majority of big road trails, it shows good duo skills, including with luggage. The two suitcases of 37 liters each (count an overall budget of 900 € for the two suitcases, their supports and the locking systems) offer a good carrying capacity and it is even possible to add a top-case or to strap a bag on the rack.

The passenger will have a little trouble getting on board, but she will console herself by savoring the comfort of her seat! Like the footrests, the handles are well placed: you just have to be careful not to burn your gloves on the ends of the pots that are flush.
