BMW R1200 R 2015 test: [R] definition
Much appreciated by BMW aficionados but technically aging, the R1200R had to complete its transformation to expand and rejuvenate its clientele … This transformation is now complete and the result is particularly convincing. ! First try.
Road … and sporty
The "fleet-twin" takes the crew with flexibility, responding promptly to the slightest demand on the accelerator, while accepting to cruise smoothly on a trickle of gas, without appreciable jolts coming from the secondary shaft transmission. and gimbal. Thanks to the ride-by-wire accelerator and perfectly calibrated on-board electronics !
The comfort of the suspensions is excellent, fork and shock absorber effectively withstanding small constraints such as the biggest shocks when passing a speed bump or a protruding bleeding. An untimely boost on the white stripes of a pedestrian crossing instantly highlights the presence of ASC anti-skidding: a real plus for safety, just like the ABS, which is here more intrusive. use of the rear brake (it is true always more difficult to dose) than the front brake.
The feeling under braking is nonetheless excellent, with very precise dosing and convincing power at all times..
By increasing the pace, the sound of the Boxer engine becomes even more manly. The torque of the twin (125 Nm at 6500 rpm) is omnipresent, offering a wide range of use (from 3000 to 7000 rpm) and even greater liveliness in "Dynamic" mode. The optional shifter allows upshifting under load without clutching, but it requires cutting the throttle to downshift in the same way..
On the small winding and well paved roads of the hinterland of Benidorm, the R1200R reveals a behavior of the most playful and bends with good grace to all our jokes. It is certainly necessary to help a little of the weight of the body to register it more strongly on the angle or to apprehend effectively a series of turns, but overall the result is more than convincing. !
Finally, the feeling of the front axle is perceptible, making it possible to better understand the limits of the excellent Metzeler Z8 Interact which have proved to be perfectly suited to this bike and to our playground..
In the end, this new R1200R does not demerit and can without complex rub shoulders with roadsters a priori more lively or sharpened. Even the ground clearance is satisfactory, despite the sometimes noticeable presence of the central stand.
The DTC traction control with cornering detection perfectly fulfills its role, to such an extent that it is difficult to perceive its intervention during an untimely go-around when exiting a curve. The pilot’s wind protection remains limited on the road, but it is possible to add a small optional windscreen (€ 185).
The carrying capacity is limited to a small accommodation under the saddle, but it is of course possible to add a kit of side cases to go on an adventure on the roads of France or elsewhere. As for gasoline consumption, the on-board computer showed an average of 6.5 liters per 100 km at the end of our test of about 200 km, traveled it is true at a rather sustained pace. This ensures a theoretical range of around 275 km with the current 18-liter tank.
"Make life a ride"
The new BMW slogan advocates making your life a pleasant ride … a priori riding a German motorcycle. A call to the road to which we obviously did not remain indifferent !
However, the game is far from over: this new 2015 R1200R will have to convince aficionados of the brand that we can easily do without the Telelever, and fans of powerful and playful roadsters that a good liquid flat-twin of 125 horsepower at 13,400 € in standard version is well worth a large Japanese 4-cylinder 142 horsepower (at 12,195 €) or an Italian twin-cylinder of 106 hp (at 13,490 €).
Be that as it may, the Bavarian manufacturer’s roadster offering is further broadened with this attractive new sport / GT roadster. In addition to this new R1200R, the BMW range indeed includes the player with air-cooled flat-twin engine and the sulphurous 4-cylinder engine very similar in base price (13,250 €), to which are added the twin-cylinder engine in line and 4-cylinder.
