It’s not easy to develop an icon like "il Mostro" without risking to deviate from the original concept. Ducati succeeds yet once again with the new Monster 1100 Evo: a more efficient and modern roadster but still just as endearing !

The Monster Evo … read the right way !

Despite the appreciable concessions made to comfort, the ergonomics of the Monster 1100 Evo remain distinctive. Even if its measured saddle height (810 mm) and the pleasant narrowness of its tank at the crotch help to facilitate the grip, the high and set back toe clips as well as the inclination of the bust required to catch the wide handlebars betray its sporting genes !

Light (169 kg dry) and extremely compact (1450 mm wheelbase, only 20 mm more than an 848!), The "Monster" transalpine yet tame easily. The knees bent along his skeleton made of steel tubes and the right hand directly connected to his 1078 cc heart by means of a precise accelerator, the pilot even quickly experiences the sensation of being "one" with the machine..

And this generous thrilling Desmodromic distribution, Ducati has given it even more muscle on this new version: the L-twin and its four valves proudly claim 100 hp all round at 7500 rpm for a torque value identical to the previous model (103 Nm at 6000 rpm).

To gain these five additional horses, the Bologna engine manufacturers notably redesigned the crankshaft, the exhaust and the combustion chambers. In the same vein, the compression ratio goes from 10.7: 1 to 11.3: 1, while some parts adopt magnesium (alternator housing in particular) in order to save weight.

On the other hand, this performance gain generates a more linear torque curve and even the sacrifice of a few Newton-meters at low revs: an almost inevitable consequence for showing ever more power, but also to make the Desmodue more usable and more civilized. In a word more "modern". Even if it means risking to sacrifice the bad character inseparable from a big "Mostro" for some…

Fortunately, the twin rital still retains enough chest and temperament to satisfy the thrill-seeker: from the start, his big hoarse voice opens the esgourdes, while the buttocks and the extremities of the body vibrate to the rhythm of his deaf people. palpitations! Releasing below 3000 rpm, the Desmodue then propels the crew with force and without any downtime until 8000 rpm when the ignition is switched off..

Equipped by Ducati France with a 14 pinion (instead of the original 15 teeth), our test model bounced on its rear wheel with each heavy load on the accelerator in second gear, while the generous ladles of torque available from mid-range catapulted everything from one curve to another with the velocity of a cannonball !

End of the end: this slightly rough mechanics which punctuates each gas cut with a few virile backfires, is operated without ulterior motive thanks to a high-end part-cycle. Stiffer than Rocco Siffredi’s work tool, the trellis frame offers exceptional stability in view of the measurements contained, while the extremely communicative front axle shows surgical precision.

So far nothing new under the sun, one would be tempted to think: the Monster having always benefited from a chassis to the height, difficult to imagine that the last born waddles like a sausage! Yes, but where the Monster 1100 Evo hits hard, it is by managing to reconcile this beautiful efficiency on the billiards with a relative – but nevertheless unprecedented – form of comfort in the bumpy parts.

Thanks to new settings, the "full adjustable" suspensions absorb road irregularities much better and provide much more information than before. Mass transfers are carried out more progressively, while the well-adjusted hydraulics allow the springs to compress and relax effectively according to the variations in relief..

However, the suspension tuning remains quite firm, as does the padding of the seat: do not expect the new "Mostro" to spare your lower back with the delicate smoothness of a road ready for the long haul. !

But it is undoubtedly less exclusive and, as a corollary, more obvious to take at high speed. No need to wiggle like Toni Elias to go from pif to paf, nor to fight to impose a change of trajectory, or even to invoke the all-powerful (some Ducatists also call him "Valentino"!) So that entering curves while standing on the brakes does not end at the hospital !
