Site analysis: As in Misano, Maverick Viñales finished the Grand Prix of Aragon at the foot of the podium as he started from pole position. But if his 4th place in San Marino could be understood because of the hazardous nature of the races in the rain, his performance on a dry track in Aragon raises more questions …
From the first laps, "Mack" was unable to keep pace with the leading men, including that of his injured teammate Valentino Rossi. In question, a choice of tires which did not correspond to him: medium at the front like Rossi and hard at the rear like the 46 and Marquez.
Except that Viñales does not ride his bike like the Italian and the Spanish: his style is more fluid and less aggressive with the front axle, especially under braking. The n ° 25 explains having lacked time to validate his choice, jostled in his schedule by the rain on Friday and the disruption of the warm-up Sunday morning because of the fog.

Would he have done better with softer tires? Maverick Viñales tries to convince himself otherwise, pointing out that Jonas Folger struggled to finish 16th over 30 seconds with the front-to-back midrange tires. And the German teammate, Johann Zarco, was also in difficulty despite soft tires front-rear (9th to 13 sec)…
The comparison is however somewhat biased insofar as the two rookies pilot the M1 2016, whose chassis is noticeably different: the new model – a hint less agile, according to the pilots – have been revised to improve the ends of the race, this which does not really produce the desired effect by the way !
Ultimately, this hesitation in his technical orientations is costing the third man in the general classification dear: his delay over Marc Marquez goes from 16 to 28 points, a little more than a victory in advance for the compatriot of Viñales…
With four races from the final gong of the 2017 season, this gap begins to be too large to tolerate the slightest additional error on the part of Lorenzo’s replacement, who caused great fright for his employer during these passes from arms to knives drawn with Rossi for the gain of 4th place !
