GP of Thailand – Dovizioso (2nd): "We are no longer fighting for the title"
Andrea Dovizioso bows for the second time in a row against Marc Marquez, author of a skilfully orchestrated maneuver in the last corner of the GP of Thailand 2018. The Ducati rider is nevertheless delighted with the ability of his motorcycle to now stand up to the Honda on different circuits. Debriefing.
Andrea Dovizioso, Ducati (3rd in qualifying and 2nd in race) : "I was not close enough to slow down well and negotiate this last corner. Unfortunately I had to brake late, which forced me to step aside. Yes, I lost the race in the last corner, but we didn’t not stopped improving and above all it was a very nice duel ".
“We have totally different styles: Marc has a ride that suits the Honda perfectly, he is more aggressive, he moves more on the bike, while for my part I ride more smoothly, as the Ducati requires. very distinct styles, but that’s precisely what is beautiful to see. And it is even more so when you have a good relationship. I’m happy because there is a lot of respect between the two of us ".

Site analysis : Well off in free practice, Andrea Dovizioso immediately placed himself in position to win the first MotoGP race in Thailand. But the Italian feared that he would not be able to maintain his speed for the duration of the race and feared deterioration of the tires due to the aggressiveness of the asphalt and the overwhelming heat and humidity conditions..
"Before, we could not have fought for the podium and even less for the victory on this kind of track where the wear is very important", he comments, delighting that the Ducati has progressed enough to be competitive on all circuits, including on a track that is apparently favorable to Honda.
The motorcycles in the winged crest had effectively flown over the discovery testing of the Thai track in February, while Marc Marquez put in an impressive show of strength during qualifying by becoming the first rider to take pole after passing through the qualifying session 1 !
So many factors carefully analyzed by "DesmoDovi", who expected to suffer to follow the defending champion … In the end, the opposite happened: the n ° 4 led most of the race with in its wake a Marc Marquez in a defensive position to preserve his front tire overheating.
A tone above the Yamaha which followed them a short distance away, the two rivals thus engaged in their "traditional" duel in the last laps, Marquez using and abusing trapper braking against a Dovizioso always better placed to take advantage of better acceleration. History seemed set to repeat itself to the advantage of the Ducati, as in and last year or this year…
But Marc Marquez managed to reverse the roles and negotiate in the lead – and on the right trajectory – the last corner: this time, it was Dovizioso who found himself obliged to try everything under braking! The trap set by the n ° 93 was then closed: Dovi, unable to negotiate the right curve correctly, saw the Honda transplanting towards the rope … and the victory !
Dovizioso prepares his revenge for 2019
"It’s not good to lose the victory in the last corner, of course, but the championship is almost over and we are no longer fighting for the title", consoles Dovizioso, already beaten by Marquez and whose gap in the championship goes from 72 to 77 points for the HRC driver.
The Italian is now approaching the last races with the objective of continuing to progress towards the. To run for the crown, "Dovi" will however have to reconnect with this consistency which he lacked this year: his four white results in Spain, France, Catalonia and Great Britain weigh heavily against the consistency of Marquez.
Recall that Andrea Dovizioso’s teammate, Jorge Lorenzo, did not participate in the GP of Thailand following his violent fall in free practice. The Mallorcan, shaken by a new high side a priori caused by a technical problem, preferred to throw in the towel on Saturday morning to heal his various bruises and his fractured toes in Aragon.
