Americas GP – Lorenzo: "The race went better than expected"
Jorge Lorenzo finished the Grand Prix of the Americas in 9th place, third Ducati rider at the finish, with the satisfaction of having progressed despite his gap of almost 18 seconds over the winner Marc Marquez. MNC Statements and Analysis.
Jorge Lorenzo, Ducati (6th in qualifying and 9th in race) : "The race went better than expected, at least considering the pace I had in qualifying and in practice. Of course we can’t be happy with the end result because we are aiming for a lot more. But in terms of feeling and lap times, we took a small step forward this Sunday ".
“Everything went more or less as I expected, and then the front tire started to deteriorate. I then lost contact with Andrea Dovizioso. Without this concern, I think I could have finished the race in front of him. As the laps progressed, the situation worsened and I couldn’t do anything against Andrea Iannone and Danilo Petrucci. I lost seventh place at the end ".
Site analysis: If Jorge Lorenzo cannot decently rejoice in his – which is more behind the private Ducati of Petrucci – his performance during this third round is nevertheless encouraging. On the one hand, because the Mallorcan has achieved sixth fastest time in Austin and above all the first Ducati rider on the grid. Results more in line with his stature as a triple world champion !
In addition, the n ° 99 was again by staying in the wake of his teammate Andrea Dovizioso, technically slower in absolute terms but more experienced on the Ducati. A first for Lorenzo, so far always left behind by "DesmoDovi" in practice and in the race.
But a concern of degradation of the front tire of his Desmosedici (equipped with medium front and soft rear) sounded the death knell for the claims of the Yamaha defector, forced to be content with ninth place 17.9 seconds behind the winner … that "Jorgeuil" considers in the end not so high, he who feared to accuse 30 to 40 seconds on the leader after his first simulations carried out during the tests !
Rossi’s former teammate explains this relative "not so bad performance" by a better position on the bike, he who had realized only in Argentina (!) That he was not well installed in the saddle! The Mallorcan would now like to see an improvement in the Ducati’s ability to be entered in curves and its engine temperament, the two historic weak points of MotoGP in Bologna..
His team-mate Andrea Dovizioso, for his part, deplores the results which "confirm that we still have a lot of work to do in order to resolve the limits we are currently facing and thus fight at the forefront with our rivals on each track". The Italian is all the more disappointed since he too had started with the soft tire at the rear, like Lorenzo and Baz, hoping to shine at least on the first laps against rivals on the medium solutions or hard.
