Petrucci promotes his retention at Ducati with his podium in Catalonia

At the end of a fiercely contested Catalan Grand Prix against Rins and Quartararo, Petrucci finishes for the third time in a row on the MotoGP podium, unheard of since his debut in 2012. Enough to allow him to keep his official handlebars at Ducati ?

 "I tried to stay with Marquez at the start of the race, but it was not possible. Rins and Quartararo were also very fast. With Alex we crossed several times and he even touched me on the right side ! Then Fabio passed me and I just tried to stay with him to get away from the peloton ".

His performances encourage him to seek third place in the championship currently held by Rins, since only three points separate him from the Suzuki rider (98 against 101). Even the second place of his teammate Dovizioso, who is only five lengths (103 points) after his ?!

Admittedly, not many people would have bet on the ability of Petrucci to support the comparison with the vice-world champion, also the most consistent opponent of Marc Marquez since 2017. Enough to silence the critics who estimate his factory handlebars obtained by "cronyism" with his compatriots…

The objective is to continue on this path in order to obtain an extension of his one-year contract in the official team, a position openly coveted by Jack Miller. But because of his irregularity – three white results in seven races – and his impulsive character, the Ducati Pramac rider is not as popular as "Petrux" at Ducati.

"Give the best" to stay at the factory

Danilo Petrucci brushes aside these considerations, despite rumors announcing the imminence of his renewal on the factory bike of the Bologna coat of arms. "I do not think about it", he assures, while admitting quite logically "to give the best to try to convince them".

Lucid, the native of Terni is also aware of having received a boost thanks to: Viñales, Rossi and the Honda official were evolving at a different pace than Petrucci, moderately at ease on the Montmelo circuit where he qualified 7th after falling.

This lack of speed can be seen in particular by his sixth fastest time in the race – behind Marquez, Quartararo, Crutchlow, Rins and Miller – and his lack of resistance when the young French prodigy passed him. Ducati owes him, however, to appear in the quartet of star manufacturers in Catalonia: Honda with Marquez, Yamaha with Quartararo and Rins with Suzuki. Another good point for "Petrux" !
