Qatar MotoGP GP – Baz: "I was faster than Lorenzo in some places"
Loris Baz fought in Qatar to claim a deserving 12th place in his 2016 Ducati, just behind Jorge Lorenzo’s factory Desmosedici. A good start for the Haut-Savoyard, yet slowed down by a brake problem and disturbed by the death of his compatriots Anthony Delhalle and Adrien Protat… Statements and Analysis.
Loris Baz, Ducati Avintia (14th on the grid, 12th in the race): “I was not really disturbed by the situation at the start, but rather by the tragic disappearance of Adrien today (the Lyon driver on Sunday at Le Mans during the Supersport race of the French championship, Editor’s note). The conditions weren’t exactly ideal, but I was able to stay both focused and relaxed. For the pace of the race, I knew it was going to be tough but I was pretty confident. You really had to control the front, which tended to slide a lot with the medium tire. I held the bike with the elbow many times before I had a problem with my front brake guard adjusting screw ”.
“The lever was further away and very hard, my arm started to paralyze, complicating my end of the race. So I couldn’t keep up with Lorenzo because I was in a lot of pain and I even had trouble accelerating. On this side I’m disappointed, because I know I was faster than him in some places. However, I preferred to insure by avoiding taking unnecessary risks. I am nevertheless satisfied with this 12th place. We finished the race while understanding a lot about the bike. I don’t think I’ve ever finished so close to the leaders on a dry track. We are progressing and it’s a good race that I would like to dedicate to Anthony (, Editor’s note) and Adrien. I was keen to achieve this result for them ”.

MNC analysis: Loris Baz had started his first race weekend rather well on the Ducati Desmosedici GP16, a notch more efficient and less physical than his old GP15 but nevertheless less advanced than the 2017 satellite version driven by his Spanish teammate Hector Barbera, Alvaro Bautista at Aspar or Danilo Petrucci at Pramac.
Well recovered from his multiple injuries contracted last year, “Baz-ooka” thus moved to sixth place in the first free practice, before gradually falling to 14th in the combined classification which the organization used to establish the starting grid following the cancellation of qualifying due to rain. In the race, Loris suffered from a guard problem with his brake lever, which he said prevented him from getting the best of the new Bologna Red star: Jorge Lorenzo !
The Frenchman finally finished in twelfth place, just 7 tenths behind the Mallorcan factory Desmosedici and above all ahead of his teammate Barbera’s more capable bike! Not bad at all given his technical problem and the circumstances, as Loris had to take it upon himself to overcome the emotion linked to the death of Adrien Protat a few hours before the start of the MotoGP race…
His convincing result on this start, Loris will dedicate to the arrival to the Lyon driver who died at Le Mans, but also to Anthony Delhalle who was killed shortly before during private testing with the SERT Suzuki GSX-R1000. It is therefore with the satisfaction of a duty accomplished but with a heavy heart that Loris Baz leaves Qatar and turns to the next event, the Argentine Grand Prix on April 9.
