Spanish GP – Rossi (10th): We have to try to understand what happened…
Valentino Rossi narrowly retains the lead of the MotoGP World Championship after the Spanish Grand Prix, but this Andalusian weekend is far from having fulfilled the expectations of the Doctor, who remained in the shadow from start to finish.
Valentino Rossi, Yamaha-Movistar (7th in qualifying and 10th in race) : "A very difficult race, after a difficult weekend". This is what will remain of this 2017 Spanish Grand Prix for Valentino Rossi, disappointing tenth at the finish behind drivers such as Danilo Petrucci, Jonas Folger or Aleix Espargaro…
"I never had a good feeling with the bike and the tires", regrets the Doctor. "We tried a lot of things, especially on the cornering and acceleration problems, but unfortunately during the race it got worse. We tried a few modifications but I also had a problem with the front. I had to slow down a lot and I had a lot of vibrations. It’s OK to have made it through to the end, but the weekend was difficult for the whole team. We expected to be stronger and more competitive on this circuit, given the results of last year. We have to try to understand what happened, tomorrow we have a test and we will see ".

Neither did his teammate Maverick Viñales (6th), Valentino Rossi – – manage to counter the Honda armada in Jerez, nor Jorge Lorenzo who finally climbed on the podium for the first time on Ducati. The official Yamaha riders finish behind even Johann Zarco, brilliant 4th and best representative of the brand in tuning forks !
"It was quite tricky today because the track conditions made the grip levels difficult," admits Nicolas Goubert, MotoGP manager at Michelin. "The surface is still quite slippery here, but when the temperatures have increased the grip has dropped further which has created new problems for the riders. We will have to take this into consideration the next time we drive in Jerez if the track temperature is again very high ".
However, with the same weather conditions, the same level of grip and the same tires, the rest of the field encountered significantly less difficulty than the Yamaha officials … "It seems that the harder front tire works better on our motorcycle when it is cooler, because that was the only difference between the and the race ", analysis for his part Massimo Meregalli, director of the official Yamaha team. "We will analyze the data of the race and draw the necessary lessons from it".
Hopefully the engineers will find convincing explanations and effective solutions during the test scheduled for today in Jerez, before disembarking at Le Mans for the French Grand Prix in 15 days. !
